*Starred Review* Ideal for families with working parentsand thats pretty much everyone now, right?Levines cozy ode to counting down to the weekend should provide some solace to the lonely: The hardest part of going to work is being apart from you. / Lets count the days till were both at home with a special thing to do. Levine smartly doesnt put all of his eggs in the weekend basket, pausing to focus upon special moments of togetherness wherever they happen to fall: at breakfast, while getting on the bus, when the parents return at night, and during family time on the sofa. The diversity extends to geography; the town, seen in full on the title page, includes metropolitan, suburban, and rural areas, and families from each region share the spotlight. Hectors grinning cartoon-style illustrations are delightful, based in reality but accented with unexpected color, such as the carnival stripes of a farmers distant field. But the books greatest accomplishment might be its crosssection of middle America: white, black, old, young, white-collar, blue-collar, straight, and gay (andscandal!the gay couple is pictured hanging out in the bedroom). Its that rare book perceptive enough to recognize that the random moments are those we treasure most. Preschool-Grade 1. --Daniel Kraus
About the Author
Arthur A. Levine is the author of several books for children. His most recent picture book, MONDAY IS ONE DAY, was hailed by Caldecott Honor medalist, Brian Selznick, as a "delightful book," and was lauded by Booklist magazine in a starred review as "that rare book perceptive enough to recognize that the random moments are those we treasure most." Arthur has been a children’s book publisher and editor for twenty-five years. Mr. Levine lives in New Jersey with his family.
Julian Hector is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design. His titles include THE LITTLE MATADOR and THIS IS THE FIREFIGHTER. He currently resides in New York City.
The most common way I'm introduced at book events is this: "Arthur Levine is the co-editor of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Books." That true! And I'm also the publisher of Arthur A. Levine Books, an imprint of Scholastic Inc. But from the "other side of the table" I write books too.
Here's the bio I have on my website: www.arthuralevinebooks.com:
Arthur A. Levine Books launched in 1997 and is currently celebrating its 15th Anniversary! The first book published was Norma Fox Mazer's outstanding novel When She Was Good. In terms of writing quality, this set a very high standard for their novelists, but Arthur is proud of the group that he's gathered together, with the help of his exceptionally talented Executive Editor Cheryl Klein, and Associate Editor Emily Clement. They include literary stars like Carolyn Coman, Francisco Stork, Lisa Yee, Bobbie Pyron, Jaclyn Moriarty, and of course, J. K. Rowling, as well as fabulous newcomers like Mike Jung, Martha Brockenbrough, and Alaya Dawn Johnson. Arthur hasn't abandoned his picture book roots, though! About thirty percent of the books they do are fully illustrated, and they're proud to be working with a group that includes the incomparable Shaun Tan, well-known masters such as Allen Say, Richard Egielski,, Steven Kellogg, Komako Sakai, and Sean Qualls, and talented illustrators at the start of their careers such as Israel Sanchez, Shino Arihara, and more. As for Arthur as a writer? Well, his first book in 15 years came out from Scholastic Press in 2011: MONDAY IS ONE DAY, illustrated by Julian Hector; it's a love song for kids with working parents, in families of all shapes and sizes. THE VERY BEARY TOOTH FAIRY, illustrated by Sarah Brannen will be out in the Spring of 2013, also from Scholastic Press.
A sweet book that captures the simple pleasure of looking forward to time together. Many different types of families are represented, in many different settings -- with attractive illustrations and a sweet poem that pulls it all together. For those of us working parents who have such ambivalence about leaving our kids, this book conveys the love we feel for our kids in a powerful and endearing way.
I love this new book, as does my youngest daughter, who reads it to me. It's one of those examples of why children's books are such a delight - the poetry of the genre. The poem is endearing, the illustrations are vibrant, and the images show the realities of kids' lives in a natural way -- from urban to farm, from mom and pop to two dads. Just love it!
A terrific book for ALL families! I loved it, so did my children. It is truly great for all working parents, this is the kind of book that fills families with love and understanding. THANK YOU!
