5.0 out of 5 stars Electrifying!! April 24, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Electric Guest are an LA duo comprising Asa Taccone (providing creamy androgynous vocals) and Mathew Compton. Their debut album "Mondo" is produced by producer du jour Brian "Dangermouse" Burton and their airy incredibly catchy sound is reminiscent of MGMT or even Burton's Broken Bells.

The 10 tracks are simple and melodic with hugely affecting harmonies, with story-telling lyrics, and enough quirkiness to avoid sounding too saccharine. "Holes" opens the album with a deep base and a quivery/flickery riff. "This Head I Hold" is a bouncy falsetto-sung Janelle Monaé-style number, while "Under The Gun" is a stomping groovy tale of some chap who grew up in Santa Fe.

"Awake" is groovy with a retro feel. The languid "Amber" has an island feel, reminiscent of The Eagle's "Hotel California". "The Bait" has a stomping beat, while the organ-embellished "Waves" is sunny and giddily upbeat with hand claps and elfin vocals. The 8 minute epic "Troubleman" is a tender guitar-festooned ballad with unexpected tempo shifts and dreamy harmonies flitting in and out in the background. Also continuing the mellow mood is "American Daydream" with distorted-sounding vocals, an absolute charmer, and the ballad "Control" with a Dub feel.

Everything is brilliant really. Already a strong contender for debut of the year!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and under exposed electronic-rock May 17, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
Electric Guest is an electronic-rock group in the vein of Foster The People, MGMT, The Naked and Famous, and Passion Pit. Their first single, "This Head I Hold", has been getting heavy airplay on AltNation and moderate airplay on The Spectrum. It hasn't gotten much exposure beyond that, but it could become a `sleeper hit' like "Pumped Up Kicks" was for Foster The People.

"Mondo", Electric Guest's debut album, is an excellent collection of ten songs. It's so excellent that I think the band has been criminally under exposed. Electric Guest isn't just a carbon copy of another `indietronica' band. They have their own sound. Many of the songs have a psychedelic rock sound fused with synthesizers and keyboards. The music on the album is less polished than music on typical albums. It has a "live" feel. And the lead singer has a nice voice reminiscent of a 70s soul singer, an uncommon characteristic for an `alternative' band.

"This Head I Hold" is a song that it could bring this indie band top 40 fame. Pop listeners like a catchy melody and irresistible rhythm, and this song has both. Besides "This Head I Hold", the best tracks in my opinion are "Under The Gun", "Awake", "Amber", "Waves", and the over 8-min long "Troubleman". "Amber" and "Troubleman" are more somber, while the other mentioned tracks are upbeat and get you dancing, like "Pumped Up Kicks" or MGMT's "Kids".

If you are a fan of other electronic-rock or indietronica bands, give these guys a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jumping on the Bandwagon May 4, 2012

I couldn' t have said it any better than the great first reviewer Nse Ette. This album is a knockout! Start to finish. I predict breakout hit of 2012. Great synthy pop with acoustic instruments. Beautiful unforced natural melodies and harmonies. A feel good aural masterpiece. Future classic.

The other half so so. Unique style. Love the lead singers' voices. If they filled the album with more great songs it would be a 5 rating
