Book Description

November 1, 2004

It's a new world-you've got to keep up! Richard Andreoli, Dave Ciminelli, Darren Frei, Smith Galtney, Aaron Krach, Drew Limsky, Christopher Lisotta, Parker Ray, and Dave White are eight writers whose combined work has encompassed a wide spectrum of cultural reportage: The New York Times, The Advocate, Instinct, Out, Cybersocket, Cargo, Time Out NY, Unzipped, Frontiers, and LA Weekly. Together they chart the new generation of popular icons and ideas in this wildly funny, irreverent book, which is a combination of essays, best-of lists, how-to advice, and recipes (yes, recipes) designed as a guided tour of the landscape of contemporary queer culture.

Richard Andreoli's writing has appeared in The Advocate, Instinct, Frontiers, and numerous other publications. He lives in Los Angeles.

More About the Author

Raised in San Diego, Richard Andreoli moved to Los Angeles over thirteen years ago to attend UCLA. He majored in English Literature with an emphasis in Creative Writing and graduated in 1995.

He has worked as a development executive in the entertainment industry and had his words appear in The Advocate, Los Angeles Confidential, CARGO Magazine, Metrosource, Frontiers Newsmagazine, IN Los Angeles, Instinct Magazine, Nobleworks Greeting Cards, on KPBS Radio, and he produces the Update magazine for Comic-Con International: San Diego.

In 2004, Andreoli published his first novel-- which he can't print here because Amazon.com considers the title "profanity". This landed him a spot on the program Inside TV Land: Tickled Pink, as a regular commentator for the Q Television network's On Q Live show, segments on various radio programs, and in numerous magazine interviews across the country.

Most recently, Andreoli became a staff writer on Secrets: Fashion House, an English language telenovela that will premiere this fall as the figurehead show for the new FOX-owned My Network TV; he loves all of this fame and success almost as much as he enjoys writing about himself in the third-person.

He currently lives and works in Los Angeles with his partner, Steve.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fag Hag's Dream Read!, December 14, 2004

I LOVE THIS BOOK! Andreoli's pop culture references from porn stars to (sit down) Marie Osmond t-shirts make for a fun and clever read. My favorite are all of the TV Generation memories the author writes about in eery detail; it's as though he took a trip back in time and channeled this book.

It will be the stocking stuffer for all of my gay male friends this Christmas!!

Such an amazing read!! I could not put it down. A book that quotes both Cristal Connors (Gina Gershon) and Sylvia Fowler (Rosalind Russell) before the first chapter is definitely worth having on your shelf. Not to mention reminding us all of the contributions Jim J. Bullard has given to the world. Read it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good fun, December 12, 2005

A very of-the-moment book on contemporary gay culture that encompasses a broad range of trends and fads. Tongue in cheek (like the cover model, literally) but also serious minded enough. Perhaps the only flaw of the book is the editor Richard Andreoli using this book to constantly remind us how hot he is. (He tries a gig as a go-go boy, with pictures, he talks about being admired by a group of men as he tries on a sexy swimsuit, he lets us know that Jennifer Garner complimented him on his bicep.) Richard, you are very handsome and look great but your constant need for affirmation shows that apparently the self-esteem has yet to catch up with him, and inadvertently showcases the less savory side of the gay world's oobsession with looks. Other than that, the book is lightweight, but good, fun.
