Editorial Reviews

2013 release, an album (and tour) celebrating Halloween, the most sinister day of all. The album is a collection of new music from The Fleshtones, Los Straitjackets and Southern Culture On The Skids and promises to put any listener in a spooky mood.

-The songs by Southern Culture on the Skids are great and are the best tracks (in my humble opinion, of course).
-The Los Straitjackets songs are good(no vocal, all instrumental - if you aren't familiar with the band). One exception is Que Monstruous Son which is all three bands - LS, SCOTS and the Fleshtones. Great track.
-I would have given this CD five stars except for the track "Ghostbusters" by LS. I find it horrifically cheesy, even for a CD titled "Mondo Zombie Boogaloo." "Ghoulman Confidential" by the Fleshtones is also a bit of a detractor (again, in my opinion). Ironically, this is the track that was highlighted in the promo email I received.

I'm not a music reviewer; I'm just a biased SCOTS fan and that probably shows in my review.

Excellent, fresh yet familiar... kid friendly and the perfect Halloween party soundtrack. My favorite would be Tingler Blues by SCOTS, a fine homage to the 1959 Vincent Price flick with a hysterical sound clip from the film as the intro. Mary Huff's (SCOTS) vocal on Goo Goo Muck is adorable. Poison Ivy from The Cramps should be proud. The instros by Los Straitjackets are admirable... the theme from Halloween meets the Ventures? It really works! Who knew? The Spanish/Mexican flair is a welcome change for otherwise tired traditional numbers. Que Monstruos Son is a Spanish-language version of Monster Mash and the production is top-notch, allowing me to listen with pleasure to a song I'd dismissed after too many years of the same-old-same version. SCOTS Loneliest Ghost in Town is a fun/clever original. The Fleshtones tracks are a bit ho-hum, but all in good fun and with a few grins and growls worthy of a listen. Will the novelty wear off? Probably not. The sound is crisp and warm and the guitar work incredible. I suspect I'll be playing this one for the kids, and myself, for years to come. I showcased the record on the little show I do for community radio out of Asheville, NC and I can't wait until we get the concert for this tour on Nov. 1st. Hey, it's on a Friday night, so could technically still work as a Halloween party, right?

Now how in the hell was I gonna turn this down? A Halloween themed album with Los Straitjackets on it? No question about it! I am a SCOTS fan as well. Not as much as Los Straitjackets, but I dig them, especially their Zombified album. Of course, that album proves why they were certainly a great choice to include on this album. This was my first exposure to The Fleshtones. I had heard of them before, but had never literally heard them. I have to say I do like their late 60s garage band sound.
I suppose you would call this a compilation album, though that doesn't sound quite right to me-more of a concept album with three bands pitching in. The cool thing is that the whole album flows smoothly, none of the bands are hogging the spotlight or overcrowding each other. The bands seem made to record an album together.
Though I'm sure most already know, Los Straitjackets are an instrumental rock band with a heavy 60s vibe-a modern day Ventures if you will. Here they do covers of the Young Frankenstein theme, The Halloween theme, and a few more. It's good stuff, and they've hinted at this kinda thing in the past with their cool tune Rockula and their cover of The Munsters theme they did for another Halloween compilation.
The SCOTS tunes surprisingly are my favorite here! I loved Zombified, and these tunes could have fit comfortably on that album(NOTE: If you like their songs on this album, you need to pick that one up!). SCOTS are a rockabilly/southern rock/swampy blues kind of hybrid. Kind of a Creedence Clearwater Revival by way of Roger Corman.
And like I said, my only knowledge of The Fleshtones are these songs, though now I will check out more. They do a great job with that punky, energetic mid-late 60s sound.

If you're a SCOTS fan, you want to pick this up for the new tracks. I was somewhat stunned by the remake of "Goo Goo Muck" - which is now the best recorded version of that song (Sorry Lux and Ivy), and "the Loneliest Ghost in Town" is an absolute jem.. Everything you'd expect from these cats.. The album has a nice flow as well, with surf instros from Los Straightjackets, and garage bombs from the Fleshtones.. an actual "fun" listen..

Love this record! And what a deal in the age of the $30+ LP! Can't remember the last time I bought a ltd edition, colored, double LP that came with a download card AND a CD of the entire album!

The jacket is beautiful and roomy, so you don't have to worry about cramming your records back into it. The inner sleeves are full-color gloss paper with album credits etc.

The music is great! Excellent for any Halloween or rockabilly/spaghetti western fanatic! This is going to be in heavy rotation for the holiday season and at the annual Halloween party.

I grabbed this disc for a Halloween soundtrack. I'm a big fan of Los Straightjackets, who are one of three artists on the disc. I hope the trick-or-treaters enjoy it when they come to the door.
