This review is from: Mondonville: 6 Sonatas Op. 3 / Minkowski, Les Musiciens du Louvre (Audio CD)
While I seldom listen to any other baroque composer than Telemann today (How did that happen? Just grew on me over the years), this is one of those precious few "other" CDs I'm especially fond of. Virtually unknown as they seem to be, these six works are as consistent, refined, quirky and stirring as one could ever wish for. Actually chamber-like in structure, Marc Minkowski chooses to treat them to a full-bodied string orchestra - supported by oboes and two very lively bassoons -, eliciting immense power and drive. If you need an explanation of that famous French term élan, you'll find it in these works. First-class entertainment, and a recommendation for the adventurous.
