Book Description

Great Modern Masters February 1, 1997
Focusing on the Dutch abstract painter, Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), this is one of a series of illustrated monographs which offer introductions to modern art and artists. Each book presents a profile of the artist and analysis of his distinctive style. After encountering Cubism in 1911, Mondrian dedicated himself to eliminating all non-essential elements from his work. By 1918 his subject matter consisted of nothing but vertical and horizontal rectangles and lines, his palette limited to black, white, grey, and the primary colours, red, blue and yellow.

This review is from: Mondrian Cameo (Great Modern Masters) (Hardcover)
I think I like this book on Mondrian more than any other that I have. The reproductions are all quite good and plentiful. The text is fine, I learned a good deal. However it could have been a bit more insightful when bridging the seemingly different periods of his work. Look at his early paintings and see all that they have in common with everything else he did. Notice his reoccurring primary palette, his interest in outlines, how a turning windmill could perhaps have some connection to his decision to turn a canvas on end, and his love of nature and quest to understand everything as a vertical and horizontal mark. There are very few artists as open and brave as he who let his work truly evolve to such an ideal state.

4.0 out of 5 stars Met my needs, April 30, 2009
I purchased this book because I recently moved to a street named "Mondrian Way". I am an amateur decorator and many articles I read would reference a "Mondrian-like" appearance or "reminscent of Mondrian". I was curious about "Mondrian" and this book not only has satisfied my curiousity about the person, but also about his art and the motivation behind it. I would recommend this book to anyone with a similar interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise Mondrian, July 11, 2011

The narrative is very well written and provides a chronological history of the artist, from Mondrian's early days, before the iconic, blocks of color and lines to his last works. Illustrations are referenced from the narrativ,e throughout.
