Great Overview, December 2, 2007
This book is a great overview of Monet's work - 50 color plates with quite concise descriptions of each, interesting facts, and things to look for in each painting. Also running throughout the book is a history of Monet's life. Lots of fascinating information for the Monet lover.

A GREAT BEGINNING WITH INSIGHTFUL COMMENTARY., January 27, 2012
What an excellent introduction this small collection and commentary this one is! Of the many, many hundreds of paintings produced, you can always get an argument over which is the best, how and why he developed in the direction he did and what aspects of his life should or should not be examined.
All those arguments (discussions) have always been rather meaningless to me as I am one of those people who could sort of care less. I do know I like this artist work for three reasons. First is his use of light and shade, a subject that has always fascinated me. Secondly, almost bar none, of all the impressionist painters, I have yet to find one of his works that did not please me and third, of all the impressionists Monet came closest to capture the feeling of his time...the people and places he painted.
This slim volume includes around 50 color plates of a selected few and the plates (although smaller than I would normally like) are quite well done. Along with the plates we have a very precise and well written review of the painting being featured.
The book also includes a very nicely done little biography and we are treated to an actual photograph of the artist working on the Nympheas panels in his studio.
While most certainly not the most comprehensive collections of his work, this 80 page oversized book does give a very good overall feel and is a wonderful introductory work and is well worth the read and study. I most certainly would recommend it for young students just beginning their study of this great man.
