Book Description

0312173016 978-0312173012 August 1997
Bringing together the economics, politics, and history of the movement toward economic and monetary union (EMU), Stephen F. Overturf looks at such topics as the first significant attempt at EMU, the Werner report and its aftermath, the basis for and structure of the Delors report, and the development of the Maastricht Treaty and the crises that followed its signing. Revealing the underlying forces which have created and maintained the momentum toward EMU, Money and European Union offers a longer term vision and core of thought around which the ideas and issues surrounding money and Europe can be truly understood.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In this concise and timely work about the movement toward a common currency for Europe, Overturf (international economics, Whittier Coll.) probes the thesis that Europe is integrating around money, which explains why many member nations of the European Union (EU) have agreed to sacrifice some of their sovereignty to a European central bank. Overturf first presents the historical framework toward economic and monetary union (EMU) and the Werner Report. He then examines the European monetary system, explores monetary integration (the Delors Report), covers the Maastricht Treaty of 1992 and the subsequent exchange-rate crisis, and pursues the economics of monetary union. With more than 200 references but no tables, no figures, and virtually no numbers or detailed economic jargon, his book offers a longer-term vision and core of thought about money and a common European currency. Highly recommended for both academic and lay readers.?Joseph W. Leonard, Miami Univ., Oxford, Ohio

4.0 out of 5 stars Money and European Union by Stephen F. Overturf, April 10, 2000
By A Customer
Although a book about any subject dealing with issues as complex as a multi-national currency can be a ponderous read, Overturf holds your attention by guiding the reader toward a pointed conclusion at each chapter's end.

His final synopsis is a lesson in skillful writing of a subject that will affect every country in the global village of international trade. This book is for those serious followers of government policy, politics and paper money.
