Disappointed, July 1, 2009
This review is from: Time and Money Flash Cards (Brighter Child Flash Cards) (Cards)
I bought these cards to expand on my son's basic recognition of money, and learning to tell time. While there is some educational value with these cards, they are not at all what I was hoping for.
The time cards are double-sided with both a traditional clock face and a digital clock face, which I thought was a plus. The problem I had is the lack of specific time increments. I wanted cards that showed the position of the hands hourly, half-hourly, and quarterly (ex: 6:00, 6:15, 6:30, and 6:45) for each hour of the day. These time cards inlcuded random increments such as 11:20 or 1:05.
I encountered a similar organization problem with the money cards. While the cards that show the front, back, and value of $.01, $.05, $.10, $.25, $.50, and $1.00, the rest of the cards were simply not very useful for establishing basic monetary value. For instance, there was a card with a combination of coins that added uo to $.79. I would rather have had cards showing that two dimes and a nickel are equivalent to a quarter's worth, and so on. There was only one card like that which showed four quarters equal one dollar.
I don't recommend this deck for beginners, but perhaps advanced beginners. I found My Book of Easy Telling Time: Learning about Hours and Half-Hours and My First Book of Money: Counting Coins more useful.

Great family fun in Spanish and English!, November 13, 2008
This review is from: Time and Money Flash Cards (Brighter Child Flash Cards) (Cards)
As homeschoolers, we usually just practice money with real money, and telling time throughout the day with real time, but I noticed my 6 year old could DO it, but not with a lot of confidence. So I purchased these. The week they came, we were talking about Spanish numbers and telling time in Spanish, so he immediately assumed the flash cards were to practice his Spanish!
And wonderfully, he is building confidence in his number abilities, money and addition, telling time, and improving his conversational ability in Spanish as well! These cards are an economical way to get more practice, and are sturdy enough for all the kids - so far no bent ones - of course the box is flattened already, but we just use a rubber band, so not a huge deal.
Don't be mistaken - there are not Spanish translations on these, but I just was thrilled with the multiple uses.

Good for Kids who Like a Challenge, October 21, 2010
This review is from: Time and Money Flash Cards (Brighter Child Flash Cards) (Cards)
I've purchased several flash card packages from School Zone now, and they're just great! The cards are about the same card stock as playing cards, with one side shiny/laminated and the other side not. One thing I noted was that despite the "flimsiness" of the cards that other reviewers mentioned, these cards can take a beating - my two toddlers have bent, squashed, and thrown around these cards and amazingly none of them have torn! Even if they did, for less than $2 a pack, it's not a problem. The shiny side on the Time and Money Flash card set features pictures of the money in various denominations and analog clocks set at various times. The dull side features the monetary amount in numbers and words and digital clocks with the time written out in words. This pack also includes a parent teaching card and a game idea card.
These flash cards are a little more advanced than I expected, but are a great mental workout for our kids. Highly recommended.
