Book Description

July 1, 1992 0446394017 978-0446394017
In 1975 two cousins, from Texas and Oklahoma, started out with $120,000. By 1989 they had persuaded banks, pension funds and insurance companies to lend them over $58 billion to buy 36 companies employing hundreds of thousands of people. In this expose, a "New York Times" reporter chronicles the rise of Henry Kravis and George Roberts, documenting a history of ambition, excessive fees and strategic "gifts" to bankers, public officials, pressmen and others. The book presents an indictment of a Wall Street money machine spinning wildly out of control, and a description of how it uses its power to influence the economy, the markets, and America's free press.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This astounding uncovering chronicles the rise and tactics of KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Company) which came closest to making "leveraged buyout" a household term. It documents a history of ambition, excessive fees, and "strategic" gifts to bankers, public officials, members of the press, and others. It is the shocking indictment of a Wall Street money machine spinning out of control. The book is fascinating reading on financial history and the misuse of power. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Inside Flap

From USA Today:

Official word from KKR is that Sarah Bartlett's Money Machine "does not merit comment." But behind the scenes KKR is pulling out the big guns.

From the New York Times Book Review:

A valuable book...a very readable book...to understand contemporary financial history, one must know about KKR. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

1.0 out of 5 stars poor choice, January 4, 2001

Bartlett has written an uneven book that doesn't even provide true insights for the reader. (A caveat regarding this review but also the book: I chose not to waste my time finishing it, instead throwing it away when halfway through it.) A far better choice for those interested in reading about KKR is George Anders's "Merchants of Debt," if you can find a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for people interested in KKR., July 9, 1998
This review is from: The Money Machine: How KKR Manufactured Power and Profits (Paperback)
A fascinating account of the history behind this powerful firm. Bartlett paints a far less flattering picture of KKR than "Barbarian's at the Gate".
