Dollar Store Plays and Money Music Pays,

I've never really understood the lines dividing country-rock, pure southern rock and blues-rock although maybe that's the point: there isn't much of a line but if there is, this album wanders across the borders fairly effortlessly. Driving beat, wailing guitars, strong lyrics, I especially liked One Red Cent and Reserve the Right.

If you're like me and love the Waco Brothers, but find yourself skipping to Deano's songs, Dollar Store is for you. This one is more rock than roots--missing is the fiddle and steel guitar from the debut 'Dollar Store'--but consistently good songs and lyrics, more straight-ahead rock but they also vary tempo and volume with 'Star' ("x marks the spot where the dream up and died" - sample lyric (along with this review title), one of my favorites on the record) and 'Dying Light'. Worth the money.

Okay, but...,

I guess this cd could be categorized as roots rock. It has roots in blues, country, and miriad rock styles which derive from these. The music is not bad but not really anything special. I am a big fan of CCR and Johm Fogherty and when I purchased this disk I was hoping for a similar feeling.Dollar Store sounds kind of like the name implies, okay but somewhat substandard. The songs and the lyrics make me think that the band is a joke band, porodying CCR rather than playing music from the heart. The other thing which really annoys me is the singer's voice. It is whining and nasal again causing me to think that he is doing a parody of country singers rather than attempting anything serious. It is like a roots rock Spinal Tap. If this sort of thing appeals to you, you might enjoy this cd. If not, and you are looking for more serious Americana roots music, get anything and everything you can by the Brandos. In my opinion, Dollar Store are geeks playing nerdy tunes who have accepted their position as losers and hope that you will like them. Again, if you like CCR, check out the Brandos, they are awesome.
