Book Description

June 12, 2009
After the Tribulation of the early 22nd Century, much of the Earth was left in ruins. The human population dropped considerably. Most cities were leveled. Entire governments collapsed. Corporations had to find new ways to sustain themselves globally. Private armies became the lethal edge of competition. New races and creatures appeared when mysterious portals opened throughout the world. Most recreated their societies where humans once flourished. With their cultures, they also brought magic. The dark elves were among the first new forms humans identified. Those who emerged from the Japanese portal were seized, most enslaved. Corporations found their dark magic and nefarious personalities perfect for training as ninjas, deadly assassins who were better than a handful of highly trained soldiers. Across the globe in Halcyon, built on the ruins of old New York City, corporations use anonymous mercenaries to raid their fellow companies. Stealing technology and sabotaging shipments bound for governments and other corporations are standard fare. Mercenaries dare not cross their clients or fail their missions. Life expectancy is short. With little other work available to ex-soldiers and trained gunmen, they become the pawns in the ongoing war of greed and survival. Alec Laurence has played the game for more than twenty years. He's been luck so far. But a near-fatal mistake leads him to consider his retirement. With his experienced gunman Jake Sutton, his loud-mouthed driver Beetle, and the calculating dark elf ninja Eizo, he ventures to escape the grind that his live has become. But with the knowledge he has of his clients, from years of corporate raids, can he just walk away?

5.0 out of 5 stars Darn Good Read!, September 19, 2009
This review is from: Money for Nothing (Hardcover)
For a first effort, this book ROCKS!

The action kicks off with the first sentence and doesnt let you go. Great characters keep you interested in what happens to them. Interesting environment - post apocolyptic New York. Just a well written story that I thouroughly enjoyed - even tho this isnt my normal genre of book - i usually go for legal thrillers.

Do yourself a favor and pick this one up - you will be glad you did! (and waiting anxiously for the next one just like I am!!!)

5.0 out of 5 stars A great start, September 19, 2009

This review is from: Money for Nothing (Hardcover)
Money for Nothing manages to set down a solid foundation for what I hope ends up being an excellent trilogy in the near future. Mr. Bair engages the reader with scenes filled with action but also with plenty of depth. The main characters hardly come off flat as the reader is given many opportunities to witness them develop as the story goes along and I seldom found myself uninterested as to what plight they had to endure next. Even some of the secondary characters are fun to follow along.

Even the setting, a unruly and chaotic future of New York City, is given great care to how it is portrayed and that, along with the story, really does immerse the reader.

All in all I found this an enjoyable novel. I eagerly await the sequel Mr. Bair has in store.
