5.0 out of 5 stars Money for Nothing December 18, 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This film is based on a true story, where a blue-collar working man finds a bag of money that literally fell off an armored truck. The pandemonium and hilarity that follows is beautifully presented by John Cusack, definitely one of the best actors of our time. I've been following Cusack's films from Class in the 1980s through today, and I have not once been disappointed by his performance. He is in top form here, making the viewer wish that they both were and weren't in his shoes. Benicio del Toro is hilarious as a swindler, and Debi Mazar is pretty good as Cusack's on-again, off-again love interest. Gandolfini of HBO's The Sopranos also costars, and is fantastic as usual. If you like any of the actors mentioned, or just want to see a good film about a real event that seems unbelievable, get your hands on this one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not John's Best But Decent if You're Bored January 20, 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
I couldn't tell if this was a comedy or not to be honest. I am a big John Cusack film ( loved him since The Sure Thing ). This movie is okay, but a lot of things are missing. The plot is jumbled. John Cusack does good with his acting but the supporting characters are bland, one-sided and boring. Debi Mazar is too annoying for words ( the way she talks bugs the heck out of me ). I've liked her in other films but her character, Monica was way too cold and too much of a golddigger for anyone to believe Cusack's character would want anything to do with her. Michael Madsen is entertaining and Benicio is good ( though is role his rather ignored ). Michael Rappaport is not one of my favorites but he carries his part well. The writing was just too bland. I kept waiting for Cusack's character to do much more with that money. The movie had a hell of a plot if only they knew what to do with it. I thought the sex scene was tacky since this film was more on the PG side. I guess the filmmakers knew this was no prize and added the sex in to entice people. Obviously it didn't work. I don't think more than ten people I've known in my entire life has seen or heard of this movie. It's a film that came and went without any mention in the last ten years. This film was probably Cusack's most ignored at the box office. It came out in 93 and I only remembered it being advertised once. I don't even remember major reviews done for it. This is not Cusack's best film but it's not his fault. He does a wonderful job for what he's given. This film had too many holes and unneeded characters. Like I mentioned before a better love interest ( or an actress with a name ) would have added something to this. I think Mary Stuart Matterson or Bridget Fonda would have rocked as Cusack's love interest. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie March 30, 2005
By L. Bell
Format:VHS Tape
I love John Cusak and I found this movie at a garage sale. I didn't even know about this movie, but I loved it. It is entertaining and always interesting to see movies about the turmoil characters go through over doing the right thing. Plus, I believe this is based on a true story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Add to the Cusack collection January 25, 2014

Great movie for the Cusack follower! Cusack always delivers a great performance and this is a great movie to have to really see him in the beginning of this career that is a bit separated from his other roles.

3.0 out of 5 stars AVERAGE RATING FOR MOVIE August 23, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Joey Coyle was my 2nd cousin. The book "Finders Keepers" was more close to being true than the the Movie "Money for Nothing".

Joey lived with his mother on Front Street alright, but his older brother Billy and wife Eleanor lived on second street. Also his mom moved in with Joey's sister Ellen and her Husband Charlie O'Brien and his niece Katie O'Brien. Don't remember Billy's kids names.

Also they mentioned in the movie that Joey's middle name was John and that was a mistake his middle name was William after his dad. I think the police accidently arrested a Joseph John Coyle for the crime based on some conflict, heck everybody in Kensington in NE Philly and in SE Philly was either called Jimmy or Joey Coyle.

Also Joey's natural hair color was light and not dark. He died it dark, not blonde when he took off for NY with his friend.

His girl friend was not a marcy, it was some teenager named Linda, who was two timing it. They were both doing drugs and booze.

We just thought he gave all the money away to all the poor on the streets, we never knew he was mixed up with the mob, but that is easy to understand if you live in Philly and are on the streets. There used to be hustlers working for the Italian and Irish mobs on every other corner with a bar.

Anyway, the movie was just OK, I would not watch it again. The actor playing Joey was way too smart for the role, and did not act like the real goofy Joey.

Read the book, if you want a more realistic understanding of what happened. You can read it in a few hours. You can tell the writer was definitely a writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer, what he was not sure of, he left out of the book. The movie may not have portrayed Joey's sister and husband and daughter in the movie for legal reasons. They were a bit more intelligent, religious, and really not wanting to advertise their brother's mistakes.
