Book Description

This book tells a tale of innovation, disruption, and transformation.
Mobile money, e-money, e-float, e-wallets, mobile banking, however you characterize it, is not just a cool app. It’s a killer app, the first for mobile phones in the developing world. It’s also a disruptive innovation that threatens incumbent businesses and is sparking new business formation and entrepreneurship.
Nowhere is this mobile money phenomenon more prevalent and successful than in Kenya. In five years, 19 million Kenyans, nearly 70% of the adult population, have signed up for mobile money services. Sixteen million are customers of M-PESA (‘M’ for Mobile and pesa means money in Swahili). Now, one out of every two people in the world who sends money over a mobile phone is a Kenyan. Mobile money is the rare case in which a poor African country is the global market leader and an exporter of innovation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice little story describing the M-pesa program April 20, 2012

Nice read for a Sunday afternoon. If only all program case studies are written this way, will they be read.

This is a must read for all the bankers/managers working on alternate payment methods. It is not about a new technology/idea that matters in the end, but the execution that makes the whole difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive read on a potential game changer April 28, 2012

This is M-PESA served on a fast food platter. Ground realities are presented in full light, with the larger picture of mobile money clearly laid out.

I read this book prior to working with a mobile-money startup in Kenya.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good history of this new subject March 29, 2012

I'd recommend this book either as a primer for someone with a new interest in mobile money, or who wants more of the inside story of how M-Pesa started. It's journalistic style makes a good change from technical literature on the subject.
