Ideal baby shower gift,

This review is from: Money Savvy Pig (Toy)
As a purchaser of the Money Savvy Pig for the past several years I am delighted with the new larger size and the ease at which the money can be taken out when it comes time to transfer the money to the bank or to spend on the goal that the child determined. I buy several at a time to have on hand for baby showers. Most of the other guests want to buy one for their children too. I also used them for Christmas gifts for my neighbor girls who were saving money for their summer camp. I've even had teens ask where they can get one. The Money Savvy Pig is a great tool to share with children during Teach Children to Save Week (scheduled for April 26, 2005).

I have the first version, now a collector's item--it's interesting to see the improvements in this newest piggy and I'm tempted to buy it all over again for my nieces and nephews. It's bigger and the stashed cash now exits the feet. Paper money in particular is easier to retrieve. I've heard that the creators have introduced a "cache cow" for young adults. This I've got to see!

I decided to start teaching my 7 year old daughter about money, but I could never find anything other than an ordinary bank (of course some made loud noises)! Lots of them are cute, but don't explain anything. I found the Money Savvy Pig and it improves on the traditional "piggy bank" because it has 4 stomachs! My daughter can put coins and bills in all four slots -- save, spend, donate and invest, and I can use the parent guide to teach her what happens to her money in all 4 cases. I love the way the money comes out of his little feet!

Didn't withstand normal handling.,

My 5-year old was kneeling on the floor when this bank slipped out of his hands and fell about 4 inches onto carpet. It broke in half along the middle seam.

It may take a village to raise a child, but your going to need this pig if you want your children to be money smart! This is a great tool to teach young children the importance of saving, spending, donating, and investing. I have to young girls (7 and 10) and they totally get the concepts this piggy bank teaches. This pig is an inexpensive way to teach your child a very valuable lesson that is not readily available to be learned in school. Although, I have heard that some public schools in Chicago are teaching this program and using the Money Savvy Pig. If they endorse it, it certainly gets my vote! This is also a great idea for a girl or boy scout try-it activity! Don't forget christmas presents too. The lessons of the pig will last a lifetime!

I recently ordered two Money Savvy pigs for my two young nieces. Besides for being a good tool to teach the kids about the basic family finance, Money Savvy pigs will help them to develop some important values in life, such as appreciation and being responsible.

Great Idea, Poor Execution--Find something more solid,

I bought this piggy bank for my six-year old son, who recently took up the habit of picking up every coin he can get his hands on. I really liked the idea of showing him how money could be spent/saved, etc., and the reviews of this product were good, for the most part. The pig is certainly large, and attractive, and the blue plastic is clear enough that you can see the money adding up inside.
I would not, however, recommend this bank to anyone. Perhaps we got a "bad" bank (other reviewers have attested to its durability), but my son broke his within an hour of getting it. It wasn't even that he was trying to bang it around--he gleefully filled up a good portion of the bank with his accumulated "loot", then went to move it from his bed to his nightstand, at which point he dropped it about two feet ONTO A CARPETED FLOOR and it broke in half. My son is still using the bank--his brother helped him put it back together with duck tape--but $15 for a piece of cheap plastic that breaks so quickly is way too much.

My daughter received one as a birthday gift and my boys would fight over it, so I had to order additional ones for the family. They love coming up with goals for their allowance and enjoy watching their money grow in each of the four chambers! What a great way to teach them about money!

You don't understand, most adults I know don't have a clue about how to manage their money. I have this at my desk at work and have found it very helpful in "educating" my colleagues on the facts of financial life.

Excellent Tool if you can teach a child to save,

In my mind it is never too early to start teaching my children responsible ways to handle money. At age four they all began earning allowance for completely small chores around the house. Now at their age chores are limited to helping pick up trash around the yard, tossing their dirty clothes in a basket and putting dirty dishes in the sink. For each day they complete at least one of these without complaint, they earn a dollar.
Until we introduced the Money Savvy Pig, every penny their earned was spent right away on what I like to call "junk" meaning that it was something that would be thrown away with a few weeks. Since we only have one pig in blue, I selected my 4 year old son to help me with this project. I carefully instructed him in what the purpose of the bank was for: 1. Save ~ this is where he would put all or a portion of his money to save for larger items or events that he would like to participate in at a later time 2. Spend ~ this section is for his quick spend money which he could use on less expensive items or even gum and a pop if he wished. 3. Donate ~ this is where he would put the amount he wished to giveaway to a worthy cause. Their school always has a selected charity going on and it made this easier to explain. 4. Invest ~ this was the hard part to explain because he is only four. I did however eventually get to where he understood that the money that went in here would eventually buy a savings bond that would grow and grow as he got older. Then when he graduated he could cash these in for things like a car or college. The Money Savvy Pig itself is separated into four chambers, label as seen above. It also comes with an instruction booklet and several stickers to help let your child remember what the bigger words mean on their level. We have not used the stickers as of yet because I fear that at the age of four, he cannot make a sound decision without changing his mind the next day. So we have placed them in our filing cabinet till he gets a little older. The bank has openings in each of the feet; so that when the time comes to remove the money it fairly easy. I will tell you though that since we began using this piggy bank, he takes less and less out. We went two months without removing money and he actually saved enough to purchase a new video game he really wanted. I think this is a wonderful product to help introduce healthy financial habits in your child. After seeing the results we have with our DD, I would buy this product again. |
