Where have all the pop bands gone?,
By
This review is from: In It for the Money (Audio CD)
The kind of high-energy, infectious, mondo-melodic music Supergrass makes just doesn't seem to be in vogue anymore (I complain all the time to anyone who will listen)--but groups are still pounding it out, mostly in obscurity. This album is classic stuff. It earns its five stars--not a bad track on the album. These guys really have a nice sense of drama and humor; "In It For the Money" is a addictive singalong number; no doubt aware of this, they snap the song off in mid-refrain and launch into "Richard III". "Late in the Day", with its jangling, ramshackle rhythm is quite simply one of the loveliest ballads I've heard in a long time, and matches "It's Not Me" in wistfulness. Young pissants they may be, they still sing both the rockers and the laid-back ones with a lot of sincerity that comes through in their voices. Let's see, what else...I first heard "Cheapskate" on a new music CD, and was really struck by the groove of it. Same with "G-Song"--great grungy bass. "Sometimes I Make You Sad"--wonderfully weird instrumentation--almost sounds like a backwards mask--you expect to hear "I Buried Paul" buried in the mix. I wish I had better words to describe how good this band is--perhaps if more people were listening, Capitol wouldn't be sitting on their newest release domestically. Love ya, guys.

Supergrass shake off their brit-pop tag and mature with age,
By Paul Donnelly (North West, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In It for the Money (Audio CD)
This is one hell of an album! I am from Britain so I may be biased but this is easily Supergrass's best album (prior or subsequent) and one of the best Brtiish albums of the nineties. I don't know if they really made it in the States but they never really did in the Uk and it's a great shame if they are vastly underated on both sides of the Atlantic. In it for the Money has one of the best openings that I've heard and is a great poppy opener. Giving way to Richard III mid-tune the mood turns darker as Gaz and the gang launch into "Song 2" mode with a fantastic rock number. Other great hits include Sun hits the Sky, Hollow little reign, tonight and (lest I forget) Late in the Day. Its a definite improvement on I Should Coco and better than Supergrass in my view. There is not one bad song on the album each one connects with you on different levels. An album to compare with the best offerings of Oasis, Blur and the Manics, it deserves to get a mention when the Millenium gongs are liberally given out by the Brtish press.

Wylie-Gaz-ote...SUPER GENIUS.,

This review is from: In It for the Money (Audio CD)
Gaz and the lads really took the whole brit-rock thing to another level...scratch that. They raised the bar so high, that this record pretty much signaled the end for the hangers on bands in the U.K. "In It For The Money" is built solely on sheer talent and wonderfully rockin' songs! A must for anyone who likes the zany fun of the Kinks, the melodies of the Faces and the punk fun of the late 70's in general. But this record doesn't base it self completely in the past. Most of it sounds so great and so fresh, it could've fallen off the genius tree this afternoon. Upon it's release it earned the very top spot in my top 20 of the year list! Their concert at Caddies in Cincy still rates in my top ten shows as well!"In It For The Money" is the furthest from a sophmore slump as any band could hope to get. One disc that you should own!
