Editorial Reviews

Review

“There is no such thing as a money problem in marriage.”

Financial expert Ron Blue and his wife, Judy, insist that marital problems are never about money. But they’re often about communication, particularly when it comes to the thorny issue of finances. Marriage after broken marriage testifies to just how charged the topic of money can be, and how important it is for husbands and wives to know how to discuss it with one another.

In Money Talks and So Can We, the Blues help you and your mate communicate openly and honestly about the vital topic of managing your money. This is not just a book on family financial planning. It’s about how to operate as a team, overcoming your individual weaknesses and uniting your strengths to cultivate vision and prosperity in your marriage.

In Part One, the Blues help you bridge the financial communication gap. You’ll consider the purpose of money and marriage, get a crash course on effective communication, and learn how to put together a truly enjoyable planning weekend.

In Part Two, you’ll learn how to combine your efforts to handle some essential monetary priorities, from the basics of developing a budget, to getting out of debt, to investing wisely, to creating a will, to the pros and cons of a dual-income household, to the challenges and rewards of giving, and more.

Money Talks and So Can We will help you and your mate work as partners on the critical area of finances. Together, you can sow the seeds of security for your future, and enjoy today the benefits not only of financial stability, but of deepened trust and fruitfulness in your marriage -- Publisher

From the Publisher

Half of all marriages end in divorce, and eighty percent of those break-ups are related to money problems. But what looks like a money problem may actually be a communication problem. In Money Talks and So Can We, Ron and Judy Blue offer a framework through which couples can successfully communicate about their finances. By specifically addressing some of the most common conflicts, this book provides practical advice and valuable tools couples can use to strengthen their marriages and secure their financial future. Conflict in marriage comes for many reasons--and when you mix in the subject of money, it's not hard to reach the boiling point. Ron and Judy tackle most of the specific problems that couples encounter, offering solutions that will help couples meet one another's needs, encourage communication, and provide practical financial tools and strategies for solving the part of the problem that involves money. Everyday strategies for communication will help couples pay the bills without arguing, plan for the future, schedule regular time together and make the most of it, and discuss other important decisions including children, jobs, and church involvement. Whether a couple is just beginning their marriage or have been together for many years, Money Talks and So Can We makes sense of the dollars-and-cents part of being together.

More About the Author

Following his graduation from Indiana University with a master of business administration degree, Ron joined the management group of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. and worked with the firm in New York City, Dallas, and San Francisco. In 1970, Ron founded an Indianapolis-based CPA firm that has grown to be one of the 50 largest CPA firms in the United States. Leaving the CPA firm in 1977, Ron became administrative vice president of Leadership Dynamics International. While with Leadership Dynamics, he was involved in developing and teaching biblically based leadership and management seminars in the United States and Africa. That firm grew to manage over $2 billion in assets for its more than 5,000 clients nationwide with a staff of over 175 people in 14 regional offices. Ron retired from the financial planning firm in 2003 in order to lead Kingdom Advisors, an international effort to equip and motivate Christian financial professionals to serve the body of Christ by implementing biblical wisdom in their lives and practices, resulting in financial freedom and increased giving by thousands of dollars by thousands of Christians around the world. Ron is the author of 17 books on personal finance from a biblical perspective, including the best seller "Master Your Money," first published in 1986 and now in its thirtieth printing; "Your Money After the Big 5-0," coauthored with Larry Burkett; "Splitting Heirs"; and his most recent books, "Faith-Based Family Finances" and "Surviving Financial Meltdown." He is featured in the popular six-part Master Your Money video series, produced by Walk Thru the Bible Ministries and used in over 5,500 churches across the country. Ron has appeared on numerous radio and television programs, including "Focus on the Family," "Family News in Focus," "The 700 Club," "Prime Time America," and Moody Radio's "Open Line." He is a regular contributor to several national Christian magazines. Ron currently serves on the board of directors of Campus Crusade for Christ, Crown Financial Ministries, and the National Christian Foundation. He also serves on the board of trustees of the Maclellan Foundation and the Sandra and William B. Johnson Foundation, Inc. He formerly served on the board of directors of Family Research Council, Promise Keepers, Insight for Living, the Medical Institute, and Walk Thru the Bible Ministries. In 2002, Ron received the Honors Award from the Georgia chapter of the Financial Planning Association (FPA). In 2003, he received the honored designation of Distinguished Entrepreneur from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, his alma mater. Ron and his wife, Judy, live in Atlanta. They have five children and eleven grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pearls to Believers, August 22, 2001
This an excellent book for couples to work through the challenges that money and marriage usually bring. Especially helpful in developing a purpose for your marriage for those believing couples that want to not only grow in their marriage but in their walk with the Lord.

Useful questionnaire included to inspire communication on various levels and subjects.

Hard for me to belive that anyone could "hate" this book. Apparently uncomfortable with the Christian message, but it's not written to make people comfortable. My wife and I loved this book and have referred back to its wisdom many times. Could not recommend it more highly to couples. It will strengthen your marriage.

1.0 out of 5 stars God! This was terrible, February 7, 2001

This book was a big disappointment. It turned out to be a Christian-based approach to money management that was not mentioned in the editorial. I hated it.
