Grade 7-10–This action-filled sequel to
The House of Windjammer (Bloomsbury, 2003) takes readers from the high seas to the streets of 1637 Amsterdam. When his familys fortune is lost, Adam Windjammer sails to the Americas to try to find his uncle, hoping that he is alive and can help to restore the familys business and good name. Unsuccessful, he returns to Amsterdam to find that his old friend Jade van Helsen, the daughter of the moneylender who ruined the Windjammers and many others, has resolved to help his family. She seeks to prove her independence and to find favor with her father by protecting him from certain ruin as he entangles himself in shady business dealings. Adam becomes a man after narrow escapes on his voyage, and Jade begins to believe in herself after she undertakes the task of saving her fathers fortune. This book stands on its own, but it will be most satisfying to readers familiar with the first book. The abrupt ending indicates a further installment. An appealing read for all who enjoy mystery and adventure.

Gr. 5-8. The marine adventure begun in
The House of the Windjammer (2003) picks up with Adam aboard the
Draco cruising the coast of America, headed for Cape Fear, when it comes under cannonball fire from a Spanish galleon in 1637. Adam escapes but his uncle's death is confirmed at the scene of the shipwreck, leaving Adam with the responsibility of restoring the fortunes of his merchant family's business. The banker van Helsen continues his vendetta against the Windjammer family and still refuses to accept his daughter, Jade, who longs to be more than an investment or disappointment to her father. Torn between her loyalty to her father and her attraction to Adam, she escapes an arranged marriage and participates in a dangerous, secret plot to foil her father's plans. There's plenty of danger on both the high seas and the streets of Amsterdam, but some of the action is disappointingly offstage. Fans of the first book who climb aboard here will be treated to another taste of the unusual setting and more about the developing relationship between Adam and Jade.
