great deal January 7, 2009
Size Name:Medium
I ride a state-of-the-art 2008 Specialized Epic Marathon, but picked up the 2008 Mongoose Tyax Comp as a present for my father. After some research, I found this bike to be the best deal for the money. Shifts better then my old 2000 Specialized Rockhopper. Rim breaks are not as good as on the old Rockhopper, but yet the stopping power is not any worse then on my friends brand new Specialized HardRock with Disk breaks. The fork does not have much (if any) damping, but again has more usable travel then my old Rockhopper and comparable to new Hardrock.

I am usually good at finding great values in used deals and rarely buy new, but for this price Tyax Comp beats any used bike I could find. If $300 to $500 is your budget -- go for it. (I got mine for $330 with free shipping, amazon.com)

This is a solid beginners mountain bike. For the price, don't expect fancy components (i.e. it has lower end Shimano stuff), but it all works in a pretty nice, solid package. I would highly recommend it.

Nice Bike September 12, 2009

I don't really know bikes and their components, but, especially considering that I got this on Amazon for under $300, this bike rides great. For those beginners like me, it comes in a box and you have to assemble it by attaching the seat, front tire, pedals and handle bar. This has front shock absorbers that dipped me forward a bit the first time I turned into an uphill slope. The brakes and shifters work well. I don't plan to use this for real mountain biking, but I feel good hopping up curbs, going on grass, up and down slopes to keep up with my son. All in all, terrific bike for my budget.
