This review is from: Monk On Mondays (Audio CD)
Chuck Bernstein's liner notes point out that Monk's Music Trio has been playing at Simple Pleasure's Cafe in San Franciso, two or three Monday nights a month since August 23,1999-making it the place to be(my comments-not his);hopefully, they get around to doing Tuesday nights in Detroit.Anyway,Monk's Music Trio-Si Perkoff on piano,Sam Bevan on bass and Chuck Bernstein on drums-as Bernstein writes, could be"one of the longest, continuously performing Monk repertoire bands in the history of jazz."I miss Bernstein's photography on this one,but that doesn't detract from the music.Like the other Monk gems the trio has recorded, this one mixes some lesser known Monk compositions with his biggies. This one closes with a terrific 'Straight,No Chaser' with great solo's by Bernstein and Bevan before Perkoff kicks in on his 1906 Steinway;hey, they recorded this at his house-and Perkoff knows somethin' about piano's.
