wonderful introduction to prayer for toddlers,
By
This review is from: The Monk Who Grew Prayer (Paperback)
This is currently my 2 1/2 year old son's favorite book. It's a wonderful introduction to the daily cycle of prayers. Very beautifully illustrated. The story is very short and to the point (so that even the youngest child or the child with a short attention span can get through the book easily).

But as he worked, he was really growing prayer.,

Claire Brandenburg's, "The Monk Who Grew Prayer," is a simple and beautifully illustrated tale. It answers the question that is asked by the pilgrim in, The Way of a Pilgrim, "How does one pray without ceasing the way the apostle instructs us to?" This monk joins his daily life to the hours of prayer and the Jesus Prayer. My kids and I love (and plan on sharing) this book.

A lovely children's story (good for adults as well) of how it is possible practically in everyday life to "pray without ceasing" as Christians are instructed to do. All my kids enjoyed this book and the artwork is beautiful.

Despite it's spare use of verbiage, thus its appropriateness for 2-year-olds, it has depth for a much older crowd. Adults can benefit from the peek into a contemplative life. Children of all ages can see how they can turn every menial task into a prayer. Soft colors in lovely illustrations and paced with a monastic cadence. Well worth several readings at this house.

You'd think I'd have realized that a monk praying would involve specific prayers (like the prayers of Compline), but I just hadn't realized that it would be like that. There is a good little glossary at the back explaining the prayers. The illustrations really suit the text and are attractive/different. It shows well how to cultivate prayer in daily life, it also shows simple living. It is NOT a general book about how prayer grows in a person's life, and had I realized how it was structured (just mentioning the prayers of matin or the 3rd hour, etc.) I likely wouldn't have bought it. It is a good book and well done for what it is, but just make sure you understand it is about a MONK and the specific prayers that go with his type of living.

what an exquisite gem! Gorgeous illustrations... profound meaning... simple text. Our favorite liturgical book ever. My only lament is it's unavailability in hardcover (as of this review)...
