If you're anything like me, you've been waiting for this album for about 2 years now. Well, the wait is over and the final results are pretty good. Nothing outstanding, but still pretty good. I was a little disappointed that a lot of this stuff is already on a few of his mixtapes, thus the lower rating. Production is handled by fellow Justus League producers Khrysis and 9th Wonder with some assistance from Ayatollah, PF Cuttin, Agallah (a.k.a. 8-Off), and a few others. The album is full of hot tracks and has a few of the usual BCC suspects (Buckshot, Cocoa Brovaz, OGC, & Rock). Tracks like "Boom Bye Yeah", "The Brokest Rapper You Know", and "Peep My Words" all bang without sounding the same. Also, "Rising To The Top" feat. Agallah (from Grand Theft Auto III) is at the end of the album. That alone made this album worth owning to me.The lyrics on the album are all on point, so most of the shortcomings on this album come from the production side of things. "Heartburn" isn't wack, but it's pretty forgettable -- even the production from 9th Wonder couldn't help that track. "One Two Y'all" has some tight lyrics, but the production has a sleep inducing effect. The fact that some of the tracks are pretty boring is the only negative thing about the album. All of the flows are on point. Monkey Barz is more than worth purchasing. If you're looking for that grimy, Sean Price vintage flow, it's available here. The production is pretty monotonous from time to time, and there is some mixtape material on here, but it's still worth a listen. I reccomend this one to the casual fans as well as others. But die hards have probably heard most of this material already. Standout Tracks: Peep My Words, Rising To The Top (My Favorite), The Brokest Rapper You Know, Monkey Barz, Boom Bye Yeah feat. Buckshot, Onion Head feat. Tek, Shake Down feat. Steele & Starang Wondah, Jail Sh*t feat. Rock, & Spliff & Wessun feat. Ruste Juxx

I'm surprised the comments on this CD aren't more positive. Sean P should be the richest rapper I know based on the strength of this effort. "I Love You" is hilarious.

1st of all, all the Heltah Skeltah's fans has been waiting for this solo project from Sean Pice=Monkey Barz lp for almost 8 - 9 years now, and is finally released in 2005=) Lyrics=9 & Beats=8.5, i expect to see producers like Shawn J. Period, Baby Paul & Da Beatminerz in the album, but none of them were in there. I also expect to see more tracks on the album, but Sean didn't make the album for me, so i can't complain. I personally copped 3 copies because i know his the "BROKEST RAPPER" in the music industry, so i just wanted to support him by copping more than 1 copy, therefore, he can have money to make another solo album. Last but not least, for the people who doesn't know who is Sean Price, y'all NEED to go cop HELTAH SKELTAH=NOCTURNAL & HELTAH SKELTAH=MAGNUM FORCE straight up...B.C.C., M.F.C. 4 life...Nutty Pro

It's refreshing to finally hear some fresh stuff out of the duck down camp. Production was simple yet to the point reminds me of early 90's blackmoon stuff makes you want to head out and strap up your back pack again.....this that grown folk rap music type of stuff. This is a preview to what's to come outta the BCC! smif-n-wessun reload is going to be gangsta

Sean Price (a.k.a. Ruck - one half of the group Heltah Skeltah) drops his solo debut, and it's a good one. I admit I'm not up to par with much of the Boot Camp Click outside a few songs by Buckshot, Heltah Skeltah, and Smif N Wessun, but I heard a lot of good things about Price, so I checked out his "Jesus Price Supastar" album and was highly impressed so I decicded to pick this one up as well. This might be slightly better than "Jesus Price Supastar" (which I'd also give 4.5 stars). With 16 songs, you get 4 that are ok, and the rest are good, a couple being real good. Guests are on a little over half the songs and are mostly his Boot Camp Click cronies. Production is decent. Agallah, Ty Deals, and Khrysis each do 2 songs, and Kleph Dollaz, MoSS, Phat Babyz Tete, 9th Wonder, PF Cuttin, Tone Mason, Dub Z, Ayatollah and Edward Maximillion each do 1 song. A nice album for fans of underground hip-hop to check out.#1 - 8 #2 - 8 #3 - 9 (f/ Tek of Smif N Wesson -- nice beat) #4 - 7.5 (f/ Buckshot, Louieville, & Steele of Smif N Wesson) #5 - 7.5 #6 - 9 (f/ Starang Wonddah & Steele of Smif N Wesson -- good beat) #7 - 8.5 #8 - 7.5 #9 - 9 (nice beat) #10 - 8 #11 - 7.5 (f/ Buckshot) #12 - 8.5 (f/ Rustee Juxx) #13 - 8 (f/ Rock of Heltah Skeltah) #14 - 8 (beat is a little odd on this one) #15 - 9 (f/ Rustee Juxx & Rock of Heltah Skeltah -- nice beat) #16 - 9 (f/ Agallah & Bazaar Royale -- tight beat) Sean Price -- b. ~1976 -- Brownsville, Brooklyn, NY check all my reviews

Peep My Words,

Sean Price may be the brokest rapper you know, but he's one of the tightest rappers I know. I truly enjoy his latest CD, Monkey Barz. The production on this CD is great and Sean P's flow is one of the wittiest, fun, playful flows I know in the Hip-Hop game. I enjoy this whole CD ALL THE WAY THROUGH! The tracks that stand out for me are Peep My Words, One Two Yall, Onion Head, Heartburn (a favorite, nice beat, 9th Wonder on the boards), Shake Down (Cuz fcuk that shortie look good!!), Mad Mann, I Love You (another favorite), Bye Bye with Buckshot (tight beat), Jail Sh*t (Heltah Skeltah track) and Rising To The Top with Agallah aka 8 Off.Monkey Barz was not a surprise to be such a great album. Sean "P" has always proved to be one of the Grimiest and lyrical MCs on the MIC. This CD is worth picking up. Big Up the whole Boot Camp Click. SUPPORT! ENJOY!

Great CD from a talented emcee,

I've been waiting for Sean P's solo debut for awhile now and I have to say that it was a success. I was *slightly* disappointed with the beat choices in the middle of the CD and his apparent laziness in concepts but overall the good outweighs the bad. The single "Onion Head" is by far the best song on the album and symbolizes the CD in a cliffnotes version. Producer Khyrsis (a 9th Wonder protege) laces Ruck with a tight sample laden beat and he beats it down with rough bars that get your head nodding. 9th Wonder himself comes in and drops a jewel for Sean P. on "Heartburn" where dude talks about everything he loves in his life, tight concept song. Like I said, the middle of the CD was just okay with average songs like "Shake Down" with a studdering misstep beat. "Brokest Rapper You Know" has some good verses but its hard to focus with the lackluster beat there too. But it picks up again with the blaze "Boom Bye Yeah" and rolls through the rest of the album with solid Ruckus lines and nice beats. This CD is definately a must have for hip-hop fans..

SEAN P...The solo debut (4.5 Stars),

Sean Price, aka Ruck of the duo Heltah Skeltah (with his partner Rock), finally drops his solo debut in 2005 on Duckdown records."N****z said I lost my image, when I cut off my dreads But I'm the nicest n**** out duke, f*** what you said" Onion Head As the first part of Duckdown's 'Triple Threat', right before 9th Wonder & Buckshot's 'Chemistry' (another great album) and Smif-N-Wessun's (Tek & Steele) 'Reloaded', 'Monkey Barz' more than lives up to all of the hype surrounding the first release from one of the Boot Camp Clik's livest members. "Ask about BIG, motherf***er ask about Pun Gangsta rappers can't fight, so they rap about guns, one" Onion Head The production on here is handled by Kleph Dollaz ("Peep My Words"), MoSS ("One Two Y'all"), Khrysis ("Onion Head" & "Bye Bye"), Phat Babyz Tete Mus & CO ("Fake Neptune"), 9th Wonder ("Heartburn"), Star.com & Justice ("Shake Down"), P.F. Cuttin ("Mad Man"), TY Deals ("Brokest Rapper You Know"), Tone Mason ("Boom Bye Yeah"), Dub Z ("I Love You (B*tch)"), Ayatollah ("Spliff N Wessun"), Agallah ("Jail S***" & "Rising To The Top"), TY Deals ("Monkey Barz") & Edward Maxmillion III ("Slap Boxing")...Yeah, a ton of different random people (I had only heard of Ayatollah, Agallah & 9th Wonder before I got this CD) "Tell your Jesus piece, send him back to Catholic church N****z actin' like my motherf***in' gat don't work Til you hit and then collapse in the dirt and screamin' "That s*** hurt" Spliff N Wessun Overall, the album came out EXTREMELY well, and is one of the best albums of 2005, even though its just a bit worse than Buckshot & 9th Wonder's 'Chemistry'. This is definately an album worth picking up for any hip hop fan "Got a Boot Camp hat on, Wu-Wear shirt Funkmaster Flex Lugz lookin like a f***ing jerk No money, clothes bummy, nose runny Bent Metrocard, 4-4 blow dummies" Monkey Barz Top 5 Songs (In Order): 1. Onion Head (Featuring Tek) - Tek, half of Smif N Wessun provides the hook, Khrysis provides probably the best beat on the album, and P is at his best 2. Spliff N Wessun (Featuring Rustee Juxx) - Great production from Ayatollah (Known for his work with Mos Def & Talib Kweli, produced the single "Ms. Fat Booty" for Mos Def among others), also one of Sean's best lyrically, with Rustee Juxx also spitting some nice bars 3. Heartburn - 9th Wonder, definately one of my top 5 producers in the game today, as expected drops a dope track with a great sample, as Sean P raps about his passions ("I love fist fights with brass knuckles, I love to get right with the 5th and make ya ass buckle") 4. Rising To The Top (Featuring Agallah) - First heard this song on 'Grand Theft Auto 3', and always thought it was one of the best in the game (with the Royce song that I cant remember the name of). Dope sample courtesty of Agallah (who produces the track as well as raps, pretty well, on it), and it's good to see this song finally released. 5. Monkey Barz - The monkey sound affects add a great feel to just one of the dopest songs on here Worst Track: Fake Neptune (Featuring Buckshot, Steele & Louieville) - Just can't get into this song, dont particularly like the beat, its pretty wack lyrically, and the guest apperances dont do anything to help Lyrics/Substance/Subject Matter - 8.5/10 Flow/Delivery - 10/10 Production - 9/10 Overall Feel - 9/10 Guest Apperances - 8.5/10 - Smif N Wessun (Tek & Steele), Buckshot, Rock, Agallah, Louieville, Starang Wondah, 5 FT (Of Black Moon), Rustee Juxx - Guest apperances play a fairly big role on here, and overall they do a pretty good job Party Rating - 5/10 - Not really a CD meant for the clubs, but tight music is tight music Overall Rating - 9/10 - One of the best albums in years, pick this up

Yes! this is a true hip hop classic. If you are a long time boot camp follower or know anything about heltah skeltah, feel very comfortable in purchasing ths album. Ruck doesn't disappoint with dope lyrics, which are comical at ttimes as well as dope beats. Guest appearances by boot camp members as well as rampage from flipmode further enhance the dopeness of this release.

Sean P's album is creative, a quality that seems absent in most hip-hop albums nowadays. I love the flip between "Heartburn"- in which he describes things he loves and "I Love You"- where he says he loves all the negative things about his better half. It'd be easier to note the lesser tracks on the album, because most of them are slammin'. On second thought, all of them are tolerable. Monkey Barz proves that P can take rap a million different places, something that Hot 97 regulars can't, or won't do. If you're a hip hop fan, you'll either like or love this album from start to finish.
