Editorial Reviews

Review

There’s a Horton-esque quality about Bernstein’s Elephant throughout, and both he and Monkey exude personality. This achievement in visual characterization is matched by Schaefer’s text, which employs controlled word choices and embeds careful repetition in support of the emerging reader. A welcome addition to the early-reader shelf.
—Kirkus Reviews

Schaefer’s rich and witty dialogue will charm and amuse early chapter-book readers. The digitally created cartoonlike characters are brimming with emotion and often surrounded by distinctive patterns of sunshine, leaves, and grasses. Children comfortable with Arnold Lobel’s FROG AND TOAD ARE FRIENDS (HarperCollins, 1970) and Wong Herbert Yee’s UPSTAIRS MOUSE AND DOWNSTAIRS MOLE (Houghton, 2005) will enjoy reading about Monkey and Elephant.
—School Library Journal

My 6 year old is a very reluctant reader. She was never interested in learning to read. No book would hold her interest, the beginning readers were too boring and simplistic, the chapter books too hard. We've been reading books to her since she was born, but it was too easy for her to let others do the reading. We've tried everything to bribe her to read. To no avail. Recently, we checked this book out at the library. The pictures really seemed to peak her interest, and she actually asked me if she could read it to me!! I was holding my breath, hoping I wasn't dreaming, as she read through, page by page, until she read, by herself,... chap...ter... two! The light from within that illuminated her face was beauty, as she exclaimed "MOM!! I'm reading a chapter book!" No two words have inspired my daughter more than "chapter two". I've heard it said that if your child isn't interested in reading, then you haven't found the right book yet. I believe it now. I've found the right book to get her reading, and she's been reading it to me every night. I want to thank Carole Lexa Schaefer (Author), and Galia Bernstein (Illustrator) for creating this book, and I'm looking forward to also buying the next for my daughter!

From the mouth of my 7-year old...
It is about a Monkey and an Elephant in 3 chapters. The Monkey and Elephant are friends. They need to find shade. They sing and they protect each other.

Her thoughts: It was funny! It was easy for me to read. The pictures were great. Have you read it? Did you like it?

My thoughts: I enjoyed listening to her read this to me. She read right through it easily, and really liked that she had read a chapter book in one sitting! She was so proud of her reading skills! :) I also enjoyed the drawings which were done so simply in both the drawing and color! They're very appealing! I fun, quick read for my little reader.
