I bought this against the recommendation of other reviewers who said this game has little to offer. They were right. The game has about 5 levels with a few challenges, but after that all you can do is repeat the same.

The Monkey King: The Legend Begins is a classic style side scrolling cute 'em up. You play as either a male or female monkey. You fly on a cloud and shoot down hoards and hoards of oncoming enemies. It's all quite simple and actually pretty fun for a short time.

The graphics are cute and look like a high quality Saturn 2D shooter. Unfortunately with its dated graphics most people will pass it up. That's too bad as it's really not all that bad a game.

My advice is to buy it used. Most sellers here have it for a few dollars so at that price it makes a nice little stocking stuffer or just an impulse buy. You can cruise through it in about an hour but less experienced players might like its simple gameplay and cute visuals. The violence is minimal and there is nothing offensive to most parents.

As far as Cute 'em Ups go, this one's not bad. It's really aimed at the younger crowd but after a few rounds of this and someday they may be yearning for some Ikaruga or Radiant Silvergun.
