Product Description

What's a Burr Puzzle? This wood crafted, precision-made puzzle of intersecting cuboids supposedly resembles a burr seed (that famous inspiration for Velcro) upon completion. Not only is the name interesting, but the puzzle itself has been an inspiration to recreational mathematicians worldwide - just ask Bill Cutler, author and puzzle enthusiasts whose seminal works, Holey 6-Piece Burr! and A Computer Analysis of All 6-Piece Burrs have captured the hearts and minds of metagrobologists* everywhere. In this classic six-piece Burr, three sets of rod pairs need to intersect with each other to properly to solve the puzzle. (*metagrobology is the study of puzzles. If you get stuck with this puzzle, Bill Cutler lives in Illinois, USA. Just ask around once you get there, he is fairly well known and surely he'd be happy to help!) Dimensions: 2 1/3" x 2 1/3" x 2 1/3"

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Derek Worth on February 12, 2009
From the description of the product online, I was expecting this puzzle to be difficult to take apart and put back together. Unfortunately, when I recieved it, it pretty much fell apart by itself and after jumbling the piece a little it was kinda difficult- maybe took me 10 minutes to fugure out. For a real challenge, try the century cube...

This is a pretty, little puzzle ;but its simplicity in looks can be a little misleading. It is one of several cube shaped burr puzzles with bit of a twist. There is something rattling inside but not visible (could it be a clue to takink it apart?) ,that is until you take it apart.Taking it apart gives a clue as to how it must be assembled. There are 12 pieces, all are identical, except for one.It would be an added challenge if one were handed the pieces already disassembled, shown a picture of it assembled;then asked to put it together.
It doesn't take a great degree of skill or time to get it all together ,except for one piece---therein lies the puzzle.
It is a fun puzzle of medium difficulty, and like all puzzles, takes some ingenuity, a little dexterity, and above all,no force is necessary.
This puzzle is also called Star Box Puzzle.

I bought 3 wood puzzle from a toy shop with $7.50, one puzzle being this one and the other two are more complex with lot more number of wood pieces. And here this alone cost more than that.

However it's a nice puzzle. If you look at the figure and think logically, it can be solved fast. And once you solve it, the satisfaction is great ....

This is a moderate difficulty level - simple for more advanced adults or a bit more challenging for kids/beginners. The larger and fewer pieces make this a good travel puzzle to take along on long drives/vacation etc... chunky blocks won't pose risk to younger children. Excellent for those with visual impairment. I own a LOT of these puzzles and enjoy each immensely so see my other reviews for a break down on difficulty level, quality of workmanship and more.
