Book Description

May 28, 2008 3 and upP and up
It’s the day of the big rocket launch, but the professor can’t decide who should fly the rocket: Patrick the monkey or Q-bert the robot. So he devises a series of clever tests to determine who’s the smartest. In the building-block competition, Q-bert builds a pyramid while Patrick attempts to eat the blocks. And so it goes, test after test. Naturally, Q-bert wins hands down, but Patrick, certain he’s the best monkey for the job, makes a last-ditch, all-out effort to reach the launch pad before Q-bert blasts off. . . Quirky humor, visual puns, and bold illustrations are designed especially to appeal to young boys.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Impudent monkeys are typically up to no good, which makes for good storytelling material. Such is the case with Patrick, who is in the running to pilot a spaceship while getting stiff competition from Q-Bert the robot. Professor von Loop, all wild hair and bushy brows, administers a few tests--counting, building blocks, coordination--to determine the most appropriate pilot. Q-Bert aces the tests but Patrick flubs miserably. The professor's verdict: "This useless monkey goes back to his cage." Not for long, as Patrick somehow gets his hands on the keys to the cage and then suddenly discovers the ability to count, stack blocks and dance like Nijinsky in order to effect his escape. He arrives at the rocket just in time to give Q-Bert the boot and grab the controls. "See you in 1000 light years," says the rascal as he lifts off. Sheer bad-boy fun--but, really, who wants a heartless professor and a soulless robot to win the day? O'Malley's energized artwork, with its dense, powdery colors, scintillates. 4.0 out of 5 stars Pointless yet enjoyable..., January 31, 2011

This review is from: Monkey See, Monkey Do (Hardcover)
My wife found this incredibly stupid, but part of the reason I liked it was because of its blatant ridiculousness. I mean, the story just kind of starts in the middle with no real leadup, but it works in a zany way. I liked the comic book style construction of the whole thing, and while the story has no real moral or poignancy, and it certainly doesn't teach your kids much, it is funny and charming in its own right. I understand why she doesn't like it, but my daughter liked it and I enjoyed reading it to her. It was stupid, but fun, so I forgave it.
