Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Product Description

Monkey Truck is a truck with a mission. He’s on the lookout for all sorts of jungle bungles -- there are chameleons to rescue before they are squashed, snakes to untangle, and hippos to pull free. And look out for that TSUNAMI! This playful picture book, with its chant-along language and plucky pictures, is perfect for little ones who like trucks and animals (probably the two most popular toddler topics). The paper-over-board format complete with heavy interior stock makes it an excellent choice for preschoolers.

Review

“My three-year-old loves Michael Slack's new picture book Monkey Truck…The artwork is great, colorful and elaborated with lots of details that are fun to talk about during storytime. All told, it's a darned fun storytime treat.” --Cory Doctorow, BoingBoing.com

“The bright, blocky and, above all, goofy digitally painted illustrations will grab attention, and Monkey Truck’s hooting mug (and tooting bottom) will keep the giggles flowing. Hope for more from this outrageous imagination.” --Kirkus Reviews

“Slack's choppy, rhyming text is propelled by sound effects and exclamations that enhance the book's read-aloud appeal…A slight yet spirited romp.” --Publishers Weekly

"Slack’s digitally rendered artwork is abundant with enjoyable texture and detail, however, and the jungle citizens are remarkably expressive.” --BCCB

Who would have thought? A truck that's actually a monkey! This monkey races through the jungle helping animals in distress, all the while munching his bananas and tooting "banana gas". Yeah, that's right. It might sound silly, but this is just the right brand of silly to get tons of laughs from preschoolers. The bright illustrations, the animals expressive faces, and lets face it just the mere sight of a truck that looks like a monkey all mark this as a great read aloud choice. There are plenty of sound effects, from Vroom Vroom, to OOH, EEH, OOH, AAH, to give any story reader plenty of time to ham it up.

The story is very short, but we do get to see Monkey Truck performing a couple of rescues. The rhyming text is a bit forced in a couple of places (tree/tsunami), but if you know it's coming, it doesn't detract from the humor or flow. This is an excellent choice for any preschool story time. A spirited reading will no doubt leave your audience yelling "Go Monkey Truck" long after you are done. Recommended.

This book has two purposes. One it is an excellent children's book. You can not go wrong with it from that angle. Second, this book is absolutely the best read while enjoying any type of mind altering substances. We also use it as a fun coffee table book at the palace.

There is a lot of action, heroism and humor packed into this little book. And there is a banana-fueled 'toot' that gets a giggle every time. The illustrations are gorgeous and really bring the story to life.

My 2 year old loves this book and it's fun to read. It's also become part of his morning potty ritual. We got it from the library, but are buying it now as he was so sad to see it go back.

My son loves this book. His is 16 months now and we've been reading it to him since he was a baby. We just say "monkey truck" without the book and his face lights up. : )

Monkey Truck is a huge hit with my son, who likes both monkeys and trucks. He thinks all of the animals are great fun, and asks us to read it over and over. He particularly giggles at the monkey "tooting" banana gas. There is a tsunami in the book caused by hippos getting stuck in a river, which may be a sensitive topic to any kids who are especially affected or sensitive to the recent tragedy in Japan. But thanks to Monkey Truck, all the animals make it to safety. My son doesn't even pay attention to the tsunami part, but I can see where the mere mention of it in this book could lead to a conversation a parent may or may not want to have. That part of the book is not a deterrent at all for us, but I wanted to point it out. All in all I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book for my 3-year old son based on a positive review on Boing Boing. It's a fun book, and the art is great. The story is short and fast paced, and really could use more interaction with the pictures. But who am I to judge? My son loves it, and yells along "Go Monkey Truck!" as I read it to him.

Totally cute and zany. Monkey truck, although a strange combination of truck and monkey, has made himself exceptionally useful in the jungle. Not sure who is amused by it more, me or my kids! An excellent quality hardcover book.
