Wilkie Collins established a reputation for himself as a highly readable storyteller. Editorial Reviews

Review

`To Mr Collins belongs the credit of having introduced into fiction those most mysterious of mysteries, the mysteries which are at our doors...' Henry James

'Refreshingly condensed, atmospheric ... and acutely psychological ... these often seem in advance of their time, exploring social antagonism and ironies, as well as the uncanny in everyday life, with zest and power.' The Observer

'Wilkie Collins was the entertainer of his day. He was immensely versatile. His full repertoire is shown in this substantial selection.' Sunday Telegraph

'the twelve stories in this volume illustrate just how good a writer of short fiction Collins really was' Christopher Roden, All Hallows 6 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling!, January 23, 2007

Like his novels that captivated readers during the 19th century (and still do today) Wilkie Collins' short stories and novellas were no less compelling. This is a wonderful collection of spooky tales that any Wilkie Collins fan will enjoy on dark and windy evening, or whenever you are in the mood for a great read. "Mad Monkton" is especially chilling. I admit once I started this book I couldn't put it down. A classic compilation from one the best and yet most forgotten writers of the Victorian era.
