from one musician to another,
By Kurt Ruff (Portland, OR United States) - See all my reviews

I will never forget that one moment in time when I first heard >Every Generation<. As a Gen-X'er myself growing up with the widespread scare of the AIDS epidemic, being part of a wasteful society, high stress and pressure from trying to exceed our parents lifestyles, credit card debt and the exponential growth of the internet worldwide, this song hit close to home. The haunting melodies, lingering drum beats, driving bass lines are pushed aside as the singer warns us about what lies ahead. As a musician myself, this is one of those bands that stops and make me wonder why I make music at all. Because these guys are at a level I could never reach. Maybe this should be every "generations" theme song. My parents had anti-Vietnam hippie music and their parents had pre-World War 2 jazz, etc. What do we and the generations behind us have? Hope or Sadness?

ever since i heard "every generation got its own disease" years ago on the radio, i was hooked... i loved the song then, and i still love it now. i thought that perhaps the reason that Fury didn't become mainstream was because the rest of the album was bad... but i heard it this summer and i couldn't have been more wrong. short of cds, i borrowed "mono" from a german friend and listened to it for a week straight, and still didn't get sick of it! it's a great album, with several soulful songs that i still find myself humming months later. i'm still puzzled by the fact that few people have heard of Fury in the Slaughterhouse.

One of Fury's better albums...,

Although the album isn't quite as great as "Brilliant Thieves," it does have a very strong impact, a definitive sense of style and grace. Fury is one of the best bands that hasn't been discovered by the mainstream. Do your self a favor. Buy a fury album or two.Songs on Mono that are spectacular: "Every Generation Got Its own Disease," "radio orchid" and, if this is the import version, "Haunted Head & Heart."

I have a CD collection of over 2,000 discs, and if the house caught fire and I had to grab ten and run...this would be one of them. I'm really sorry I missed seeing them live because they must rip as a live band. Great songs with clever and original arrangements, snappy hooks and musical twists, a super-tight band, and a style that steals from everyone and turns it into something new and yet familiar.True originals, but think early REM, Zevon, Led Zep...with a touch of Nirvana, George Thorogood...sounds crazy but.... Take and chance and listen.

Group to be Checked Out,
By geo cramer (cincy, OH USA) - See all my reviews

I have the US version of this CD I picked up in the bargain bin (out of print now). It's an interesting German group that's sort of "folky-alternative"....sort of a Hootie & the Blowfish sounding type of band (except for the lead vocals which have alot of tremble). "Every Generation.." and "Radio Orchid" are good songs, but, I kinda like "In Your Room". They have a later release (1995) titled "The Hearing & Sense of Balance" that I have and is very good. That CD also brings Hootie to mind, but, overall could be better compared to maybe Dave Mathews or similiar US bands. The vocals improved greatly (cut tremble), there's more diversity in the songs, and guitars have some edginess to them (more upbeat sound). "Your Love Won't Take Me Anywhere" could be noteworthy single if gotten airplay. FURY...is worth checking out.

One of the Best Bands You Never Hear On US Airwaves,
By Lucy Coppes (Toledo, OH) - See all my reviews

Back in my teenage years in Cleveland, OH, we had a pretty liberal alternative rock station that was big on new edge music which is how I got introduced to "Every Generation Has It's Own Disease." It wasn't long before the local rock station caught on and in the summer of 1993, this song was receiving a fair amount of airplay. Fury stood out in the heavy circulation of all the grundge music of Nirvania and Pearl Jam. I immediately ran to my local library and checked out a copy of Mono.....I was not ready to spend my the little money I had on a "one hit wonder". Needless to say, I was quite taken with the diverse music on Mono and immediately went out and bought a copy of the album. Now eleven years, graduation, college, two moves and a marriage later, Mono still plays in my CD rotation (where my grundge music is collecting dust). To tell you the truth, I have all their CDs (expensive little imports), it is just a shame that I would have to go oversees in order to hear them play live. Despite the Heavy Metal sounding name, I would describe Fury is more as a folk - rock collection in the vein of U2 in their early years (Think of The Joshua Tree) or even a touch of Dave Matthews (Under The Table And Dreaming) however, you can't really compare this band with those two...they have a totally unique sound which doesn't get stale. A lot of their songs sing of social issues as well as love and romance which can range from loud electric guitars and riffs to quiet piano and acoustic guitar. Kai (the lead singer) has an extremely distintive voice which packs energy and vitality to the fast paced songs and emotion and depth to the slower ones....oh, I guess I should mention that they lyrics are intelligently written as well, no pop fluff here. Unfortunately, Fury is another case of US radio ignoring good import bands and not giving them airplay and catering rather to the pop fluff that no one will remember ten years from now. After listening to their albums, I am extremely suprised that this band did not break into mainstream music (especially the songs that sound closer to Dave Matthews). Kai, if you come back and check on your reviews, I am sure that you have a lot of underground followers! If you are considering buying a copy of this CD or any of their music you will not be disappointed. La la la la la...sleep well honey! (All Fury fans will know what I mean by that...and Enjoy!)

no one down here has ever even heard of FURY IN THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE. when i say something about them people look at me funny or ask me who the hell they are or where i heard them (99X). then they hear the cd and its a different story. i'm glad i was the first around here to know of them because now i get to open others minds and ears and eyes to a tottally different sound that in the end they end up loving, just like you will if you buy this hard hitting, make you think cd.

This is the best album that Fury produced. You may remember one of the tracks from the radio, entitled "Every Generation Has It's Own Disease", but that is only the beginning. The band is very adept at matching the tone and pace of their music with the mood and sentiment of the lyrics in front of them, creating songs which tell stories or are just intended to provoke emotion. This is one of those CD's that you can put in the player, hit shuffle, and let the whole thing go.
