Editorial Reviews

About the Artist

Pregnant women and people with heart ailments should avoid this ride. Remember being a child at one of those Vons’ parking lot carnivals, being strapped against the wall, side by side in a circle... They start spinning you around at speeds that are lethal on the highway, your face pinned to the matted wall behind you... out of the corner of your eye you can see the expressions on your pathetic comrades’ faces across the sphere. Then the bottom drops out and your feet have nothing to touch for security and the patheticness turns to pure fear and the smell of vomit rises in the air. Just when you think you’re gonna pass out or cry or urinate yourself, the spinning slows to a stop, the floor returns and you’re released, smiling, grinning, asking your friend, "Wanna go again?"

That’s the feeling you might get when seeing The Icarus Line live. It’s powerful, savage, and abusive. It’s fucking scary. But there is a joy in being scared. It’s a rush, and when you get comfortable with it, you find its niche, relate to its void. The Icarus Line’s live show is like seeing Satan having a temper tantrum, but knowing he’s not mad at you, thus enabling you to enjoy the carnage. In under two years of existence, Los Angeles, CA’s, The Icarus Line have a half a dozen tours under their belt, covering most of the US, and solidifying a strong following up and down the west coast. After a few 7"s (Buddyhead, Hellcat) and a blood curdling EP (New American Dream), the band has found a home on crank! A RECORD COMPANY. Mono is the band’s first full length release on CD and DVD-Audio.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent first full-length., November 16, 2002
This review is from: Mono (Audio CD)
I bought this for what I thought was a little bit of an overcharge ($... or so at one of those big megastores). Turns out that this album is worth every cent. You whippersnappers should feel lucky that you can get this for cheaper than me. ;) Well, anyway, every track on this album is amazing. These guys are NOT afraid to experiment, but nonetheless this album is still very coherent and rocking.

If you don't buy this, you are T-R-I-P-P-I-N-G!

5.0 out of 5 stars Blew APC away..., November 5, 2003
By A Customer

Not only does Mono slay all other records. These guys blew the Alt. Rock boredom of APC away in Houston. Too bad all the idiot hillbillies had to get scared and throw their bottles at them the whole show.

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't like A Perfect Circle...sorry, November 18, 2003

This review is from: Mono (Audio CD)
Well, this album may not be worth 5 stars, in fact it definitely is not. But is not squarely the fault of the band. They had certain time restriction 'issues' in the studio. However i award it 5 stars to make up for the unfortunate ignorance of other posters who shall not be named (no offence but you cannot judge the band and dismiss them so easily.
Now to the album, hardcore punk is not my genre of choice but my admiration for Refused, Fugazi and to a lesser extent the drug induced feedback glory that was Spacemen 3, endeared me to this adventurous band.
To be honest, upon first listen i was afraid of what i had landed myself in: face first into screaming concoction of guitar, drums and, well, screaming. Opener "Love is Happiness" and single "Feed a Cat to your Cobra," however provided a more immediate gateway into the less accessible tracks on this album. Highlights include "L.O.S.T" and "In Lieu" which combine the sonic blast of the Stooges with confronting, though in these dark modern times, highly relevant lyrics. In true punk fashion, The Icarus Line do not adere to simple verse-chorus-verse, but this is a good thing.
This review should serve as a warning that this album is very, very raw and if you don't noise, well just don't both...no listen for even below the noise and changing song directions, great song writing is on show.
Highly reccomended - even coming from the softest of hardcore fans.
