I was most dismayed by the condition my DVDs for this set arrived in.
Although sealed the DVDs were covered with scratches, scuff marks and
even fingerprints. I have had similar from Warner Archive but never
this bad! The discs play OK but thats not the point;especially when
they are charging a premium price for them.
The Sony Choice Collection DVDs always arrive in top-notch condition
and the picture quality on their DVDs are second to none,so I am happy
to pay what they are asking.
Also on this Volume 3 Monogram Cowboy set the films are well below par.
Volumes 1 and 2 were various artists compilations and had the bonus of
Rod Cameron Westerns in color. These Johnny Mack Brown epics are pretty
dull and pretty much all in the same vein.
I hope Warners get their act together and produce better volumes in the
future;possibly Wild Bill Elliott and Wayne Morris. Also I hope that they
can improve on their rather shoddy quality control.

It was about time that someone produced the Monogram cowboys on DVD. In 1958 i met Johnny Mack Brown at the Calgary Stampede. I had a great visit with him and bought some of his publicity pictures. He did a fabulous gun handling routine. Johnny was one of the better "B" Grade Cowboys. The production values were quite good in the production of his films. The story plot lines as in all "B" movies was simple and with the good guy always winning. Again a good cross section of his movies.

love old movies, especially Westerns and have been collecting them for years. These are some I did not have, especially the Jimmy Wakely films.

I have to say that, unlike a previous contributor, my set arrived in pristine condition. The films themselves are mostly routine fare but are interesting historically. When Monogram had to cancel the Rough Riders series due to the death of Buck Jones and the re-entry to military service by Tim McCoy the studio found that JMB was available and so started his Nevada Jack McKenzie recurring role with Raymond Hatton as sidekick. These films basically followed the Rough Riders formula (see Vol 8). Flame of the West is regarded by some as JMB's best western although, in fact, Johnny's performance is the weakest part of the film. He plays a "Destry" type doctor who has forsaken guns but he doesn't have the acting range, no shading, pretty well emotionless. Watch out for Douglass Dumbrille, normally a "heavy" who walks away with the film. The last film in the set is one of his later films where he is beginning to show his age and a stunt double is very evident is a fight scene. This isn't a bad collection just not terribly exciting.
