Editorial Reviews

These are first recordings of two dramatic works by American composer Thomas Pasatieri. Written for Beverly Sills, Before Breakfast dates from 1978 and has an unusual history (including having the original score accidentally thrown in the trash by the maid). After an unsuccessful performance the score was put away and it wasn t until 2002 that it was revived and revised for Lauren Flanagan. Flanagan was the inspiration for Lady Macbeth and premiered the work in 2008 with the forces on this recording.

1. Before Breakfast
2. Lady Macbeth

Lauren Flanigan is one of those intense stage presences that can be absolutely mesmerizing when in top form. Having seen her as Donna Anna at Glimmerglass and as Barber's Vanessa in a concert version in Boston, I can attest that she is pretty thrilling.
Except for a couple of wiry high notes, she is in top form here.
Pasatieri's scores are tonal and accessible, yet manage to convey a thoroughly modern psychological view.
BEFORE BREAKFAST is a monodrama for voice and chamber orchestra with a libretto by Frank Corsaro (After a text by Eugene O'Neill) originally conceived for Beverly Sills. Unfortunately, she decided to retire before she could actually sing it. Presumably, as Flanigan is a very different type of singer, the composer re-wrote the work extensively for her.
It is a dark tale of a woman so self absorbed that she doesn't realize that her husband is committing suicide in the room next door.
LADY MACBETH is a quasi-monodrama for soprano and piano which sets the title character's principal monologues from the Shakespeare play. Sometimes one detects a slightly bluesy, jazzy tinge to the vocal lines that is surprisingly effective. (This might make an ideal curtain raiser for Boris Blacher's ROMEO AND JULIET which also channels jazz-like ideas.)
Joseph Illick is the first rate conductor for BREAKFAST and the fine pianist for LADY.
The sound recording is good and clear and there are full texts.
