5.0 out of 5 stars Great game - just like I remember but better
Just like I remember but with a better system for the "bank". The flimsy cardboard money divider is slick, black and shiny plastic. Deinitely worth the few extram bucks compared to the cheaper version that so many people complained about. My kids love it - games in progress sit for days on our table.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pure torture
There is nothing worse than a game in which the winner is often obvious in the first 10 minutes but lasts another hour and fifty minutes. If your oppoent lands on premium spaces on his first two trips around the painfully monotonous board and you do not, well, you are screwed. Monopoly enthusiasts insist it is more than just rolling the dice; important decisions are...

Like many parents, I bought the modern version of Monopoly to play with my kids, only to find out the money tray had shrunk in order to fit the new smaller box. This is not good if you like a tidy place to put the money. So, imagine my surprise and delight to discover they still made the old "Classic" game -- although for more money. I find I really like the Classic better. I suppose, if you never knew the difference, it wouldn't matter. But, once you've tried the "Classic" style, it's hard to go back. Some things can't be improved on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monopoly - The Way It Used To Look, November 1, 2010
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that a classic version of Monopoly was released in the style that it used to appear. This means: bi-fold board (folds in half, not in quarters), no Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly man) in the center of the game's name, and only the original tokens. Even the design of the packaging has a 70's/80's/90's kind of look, especially on the back side.

At first I was disappointed that the game has plastic hotels and houses, but I did some research, and apparently these pieces have been plastic for decades as far as I can tell. Therefore, you shouldn't hold the plastic pieces against this version.

Bottom line: I'm glad they did this edition accurately, which is usually the case when a retro edition of Monopoly is released.

This classic version of Monopoly is very similar to the original version which I played as a kid more than 25 years ago. In one of the reviews it was mentioned that this set is made in the USA but it is not. Apart from the appeal of the classic version, there are minor differences in the quality of this compared to the $12 version (ASIN:B00000IWCT) which my kids friends have. The hotels and houses are classic and good quality. The currency is marginally better than the standard version. The board which comes with this set is a half-fold and not the quarter-fold. While this makes for a bigger package, it does provide a better quality board (thicker) and you can always pause the game with its artifacts inside the half fold before playing again. The title deed, community chest and chance cards are thicker and good quality with crisp print and uniform cuts. The dices are hard and heavy plastic so they have a good feel. The tokens are metal and very similar to the one's from yonder years - they just seem smaller, although I do not think they are. Currency is average paper - I was expecting better. The good thing with this version is that you can enjoy with kids and adults alike because of the "classic" factor. Overall, this is a buy.

We have a blast playing this game -- everyone from the 5 year old to the grandparents. With a little help adding dots on the dice, counting money, and making change (teachable moments) the younger kids can learn the game and enjoy it! The Classic Edition is A MUST if you remember it from childhood. A little extra money is worth it. It also comes with a handy plastic tray to organize the bank money, properties, etc. You won't be disappointed with this purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a "classic" for a reason, October 2, 2011

Classics are typically those that stand the test of time. Monopoly has done that. We use it in our home often. In fact this is one of my child's favorite games. You can play it with two people or four people, longer game or shorter game, you can deal and wheel or you can play straight up as the rules suggest. We have so much fun playing this game.

It seems that some of the paper portions of this game are sturdier, more apt to take wear and tear than the game I had like this as a child. So that seems, if I'm correct, that this might be a bonus of buying the 'new classic' game.

The rules haven't changed. And while the rules are a bit more complicated than some of the newer type games that are available, that doesn't make it any less fun. It is also not a short game, even when you play with the shorter version of dealing out the property cards, it's not a very short game. It's a great rainy day game.

Well worth the money.
Enjoy.

This edition is definitely a better quality than the one which folds all around. I'm happy because I bought it. All the items inside seem solid and made of good material. I can't add anything to what the other reviewers has said.

After reading the reviews on the current edition, I decided to go with the classic. I do not have the current, so I cannot offer a comparison; just a review of the product I purchased. The classic edition is very close to the version of Monopoly I grew up with in the 80's.

The bank tray has an improved design. The bills are stored by denomination at a 45 degree angle, so you can leave the tray in the box when playing (the version I remember stored the bills flat).

Couple of minor criticisms are the houses are much larger in this edition and each property only has adequate space for 3. When you have 4, they overlap adjacent properties. I also agree with another reviewer that the Chance and Community Chest cards are almost exactly the same color.

Other than those two points, I think it's a solid purchase. Monopoly itself is a great game, and I'm very happy with this edition.

We definitely enjoyed our first time playing together. The game got really exciting even if it is tedious some of the time. We had a lot of laughs!

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless, November 21, 2011
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Monopoly - The Classic Edition (Toy)
What can anyone say about the greatest game ever made? My family and I played it again recently after a long spell, and I can only marvel at how timeless it is. My daughter and son (6 and 10) are only now becoming more aware of some of the game's hidden subtleties, which my husband and I are happy to point out (as we've been playing it for virtually our whole lives). The true genius of this game, in my opinion, is that it reflects so many facets of real life so accurately, and not just the economic components. It's about planning, negotiating, budgeting, etc. If you want to get down to someone's true personality, play a game of Monopoly with them. You will learn more about them during play than during a 5 hour discussion.

There have been so many versions produced over the years, and I have played more than my share, but there is nothing that compares to the original board. All the familiar names - ah, Boardwalk! - from the Atlantic City version of yesteryear. I don't think it's possible to ever get tired of this. A classic of epic proportions!
