Close, but not close enough, January 17, 2002
This review is from: Monopoly Casino (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
The main draw of this product is the inclusion of Monopoly multi-line slot games that have become immensely popular in real casinos. The frequency of getting to the bonus round for these 3 games (Chairman of the Board, Once Around and Reel Estate) is similar to the real thing. Unfortunately, there are some programming problems that make each game rather annoying if one is expecting this product to duplicate the slots in actual casinos.
Chairman of the Board: The disclaimer on many slot machines, "only highest amount paid," when two winning combinations result should read, for this game, "only lowest amount paid." The treasury symbol will even cancel out the bonus round if the two combinations appear on the same payline. Moreover, most spins result in at least one column with identical symbols on each row. This never happens in the real game. Finally, the dice symbol (at least two needed for scatter-pay in the real game) is meaningless for this product. There is a payout if the dice symbols are on the same payline, but it is meager, not even a push.
Once Around: The chance and community chest symbols that function in scatter-pays for the real game do not do so for this product. There is a payout, but only if these symbols are on the same payline. In addition, the bonus round tallies the score much too quickly to be enjoyed; the property names aren't even verbally announced, nor are the house awards. Perhaps the missing animation was too expensive to include, but I'd prefer the animation here over that used for the card games, where you have to wait a good minute for Mr. Monopoly to conclude dealing the cards to each player.
Reel Estate: In the real game, repeat visits to the bonus round will cumulate, hopefully, in attaining a monopoly. For example, in the real game, if one's first bonus round lands him/her on Park Place, and the next bonus round lands him/her on Boardwalk, one gets to spin again because a monopoly has been completed. This key factor in the game is not included in the product under review.
In short, the programmers either never understood the bonus round and scatter-pays for the multi-line games, or were too sloppy and/or careless in their attempt to duplicate the casino game for this product. In any event, the one thing that could have distinguished this product from others, making available a real Monopoly slot game with bonus round(s) for the PC, is spoiled by shoddy workmanship.

Tightest Slots I've Ever Played!!!!, October 12, 2002
This review is from: Monopoly Casino (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
Graphics and sound are done pretty well. However, on Chairman of the Board and Once Around, I blew my $15,000 bankroll and only hit the bonus round three times! $125 is the most I've hit on any one pull, and that's betting $45! I thought Atlantic City's slots were tight, but these take the cake. In all honesty, this would be a pretty decent slot sim if they were loosened up a bit. It can get boring playing a slot sim when the machines are too loose, but it's REALLY boring if you never hit! I bought this game because I enjoy the video slots with bonus rounds. It's very disappointing to never get to the bonus rounds.

Slot machines are not like their Vegas counterparts, January 8, 2002
This review is from: Monopoly Casino (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
I'm a big fan of the "Once Around" slot. The version on here is not like the original. First, there is no music. If you spin the bonus round, there is no "Mo-nop-o-ly" jingle either. Overall, all of the sound effects are lackluster and rather dull compared to the real thing. The bonus round is really boring without music. Second, you are forced to play 9 lines every time (the casino version lets you play 1,3,5 or 7 as well). Next, there is no "Last Bet" button, for quick play. You have to resubmit a bet and press the spin button. Next, the graphics are not the same as the slot. They are adequate, but they look a little odd if you're used to the real thing. Finally, the game is slooooooow. I have a 1.2 GHz machine and this software doesn't make use of it. It takes a long time for the 5 wheels to spin compared to the real thing, further detracting from the feeling you are playing the real thing.
