5.0 out of 5 stars A great facelift for an old favorite, July 24, 2000
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Monopoly - Star Wars Episode 1 Edition (Board Game)
I like this edition! The theme of Star Wars is tied into the board layout quite well. The board is advertised as "3-D", which means that the playing surface for the characters is raised. This creates a "well" that contains the "Jedi" and "Sith" cards (the version's names for "Community Chest" and "Chance"). I like the well -- it keeps the dice from leaving the board if someone should throw them too hard. Another nice point about the board, are little slots that hold the buildings in place; that means if the board is nudged, the buildings don't go flying off their repective property lots. The makers changed the names of the buildings from houses and hotels to apartments and towers. The last touch is, that the buildings STACK. The effect is quite appealing.

I use the term characters instead of pieces for a good reason; the players use sculpted characters from the movie to travel around the board. There are four from the "light" side and four from the "dark" side. I was impressed by the sculpting; considering how small the pieces were, they were quite recognizable. The four light side pieces are; Queen Amidala, Qui-Gon Jin, Anakin Skywalker and Jar-Jar Binks. The four dark side pieces are: Darth Sidious, Darth Maul, Sebulba and a battle droid. While I understand that the makers were attempting to please both adults and children, I thought they could have included Obi-Wan instead of Jar-Jar. I hope that the company will consider adding a "supplemental" set of characters, to allow the players a larger choice of pieces (and to please the Obi-Wan fans!).

A nice touch for the banker, is the money "rack" -- it keeps all of the bills sorted and easily visable for quick transactions. For all of those who were Banker and had to use a flat surface will appreciate this touch.

I do have a few quibbles, though. The "Free Parking" and "Jail" squares were not altered to fit the theme; I found it annoying to have the 30's vintage illustrations amongst the Star Wars' squares. Also, the blue backgrounds on the Generator Plant and Moisture Farm (the game's version of Electric Company and Water Works) are practically the same shade of blue as some of the other property pieces. The banker (or whomever sets up the board) MUST pay attention to the names of the property cards during game setup. Finally, I noticed a couple of printing errors in the game's rules and regretfully, the company didn't change the terms to fit the version -- the terms still refer to the game format of the original.

All in all, despite my "nits", this is a nice themed version of the venerable game that should be a hit with Star Wars and Monopoly enthusists.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best versions of Monopoly, December 29, 1999
By A Customer
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Monopoly - Star Wars Episode 1 Edition (Board Game)
Physically, this has got to be the best version of Monopoly available. Each title/deed card is placed in a slot on the actual game board. This makes is very easy to see which properties have been purchased. It also makes it very easy to find the title/deed card when you purchase a property. Like Monopoly 2000, the apartments stack on top of each other. Episode I Monopoly goes a step further and actually has holes where the apartments and hotels secure themselves to the board.

The biggest disadvantage that we found were the names of the properties. On occasion, we would get confused as to which properties we landed on, etc.

If you are a Star Wars fan, this is a must-have game. If you are not a Star Wars fan, the physical features of the game alone make it a valuable upgrade from other versions of Monopoly, including Monopoly 2000.

5.0 out of 5 stars The World's Greatest Board Game Returns to a Galaxy Far, Far, August 12, 2002

Away...
As an owner of the original trilogy Monopoly, I was delighted to see the world's greatest game combine with the world's greatest movie series, but I found it to be little more than a run-of-the-mill game of Monopoly with only a few special extras. When the Episode I edition came out, I received it for Christmas and have loved it ever since. It is so amazingly cool!!! The property deeds attach to the board. The hoses and hotels (or as they are referred to here, apartments and towers) are stackable and also attach to the board, so there is no bothersome vandalism of property improvements. I love it so much that I even combined the money from the original Star Wars Monopoly with the new so the bank lasts longer. After these two editions came out, the world has been subjected to needless editions of the game that don't hold a candle to the fun, excitement, and beauty of this masterpiece. I even take it out just to look at the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Force is strong in this one..., December 27, 1999

I was never much of an avid Monopoly player, but I really enjoyed playing this game. I can honestly say it's a different experience from the original Monopoly game. For example, the houses and hotels are depicted as stackable apartments and towers that are modeled after the buildings and structures from the recent Star Wars movie. If you're a Star Wars fan, you'll love it! The money system is based on credits (from the Star Wars galaxy), as well as there are tokens of recognizable characters from the movie. I would highly recommend this to any Star Wars fan or someone who would like to play the classic Monopoly game with a change of perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Still Good! It's Still Good!, June 27, 2002

Star Wars Episode I Monopoly is still good despite the release of Star Wars Deuce (II). You get eight awesome characters. You get your Qui-Gon, Darth Maul, Jar-Jar, Queen Amidala, Little Anakin, A Battle Droid, Sebulba, and Darth Sidious. The characters are really good looking. The one recommendation I have is dont let your feelings about the movie cloud your judgment on the game! I mean if you really didn't like the movie that much use different pieces or something this is such a kickin' version of monopoly. First of all of your houses stack! That's a great invention. Those of you who play monopoly regularly know what I am talking about. No trying to cram them all on. The Hotels are huge Coruscant towers. Both the Houses and Hotels lock into the game board. The game board is so cool. It is 3D! The Chance and Community Chest Squares pop out of the board. My only qualm with the game is the selection of squares. Boardwalk = Jedi Council :(. It is such a good version though and the only monopoly game I play! If you don't believe me ask the dishes ;). Buy it. Love it.

The gameplay is the same as the traditional Monopoly, only with Episode I references and locations. The figures are great (they should have replaced Jar-Jar with Obi-Wan, though). Beautiful design. Great gameplaying and sure to get a lot of use by Star Wars fans. Highly recommended!

My family loves playing this game! Until now, I had never thought of Monopoly as being educational; but my six year old son's ability to add in his head has improved tremendously. I grew up playing the original Monopoly. The new 3-D game board is ingenious. When the board gets bumped the pieces don't shift all over the place. It's a must have for Monopoly fans whether you're Star Wars fans or not! I have no doubt that my family will continue to enjoy this improved version of the game for years to come. A classic made even better!

I play the game with my friends about once a week and the only dissapoinment is the fact that Obi-Wan is not one of the game pieces. I really like how they put the properties on the game board. That way the game goes faster and you dont have to look for the piece every time one is bought. I also really like the fact that the money is Public Dieteies instead of dollers.

This game is really cool, i like how you put the deed cards in the board so you don't have to find them, and it is easier to see if that one is owned or not. the whole monopoly part of the game [needshelp] but the star wars part is cool.

You would not believe that I saw this game at a local comic book store ... This is a great game at a bargain price. My 4 & 7 year old sons love this game too. The figures are very sturdy and don't bend at all. The worst part is that my two year old wants to take the cards in and out of the board and we discovered that you can push them too far in. Be careful! The instruction booklet is just a copy of the regular game without many adaptations for the special version - too bad! If you know how to play the original this will be a snap, but it's fun to play it in a new format.
