Parker Brothers has released yet another theme version of their classic board game Monopoly. This time, the theme is America, our past, and what we've accomplished. The property sets focus on history (Yorktown, Gettysburg, and the Constitution) or inventions (baseball and basketball to the telephone.) Other sets highlight national parks or our development of entertainment, and the railroads have become milestones in transportation. This version stands above the rest because of the attention to detail that has been included. The dice are red and blue. There are fun facts on the mortgage side of each title deed card. The tokens are right in keeping with the theme as well. After all, what's more American then Apple Pie? As a change, the corner squares can be altered to make the game more interesting. Some of these involve trivia questions that require knowledge of American history and geography. The cards are quite challenging, but also a great way to gain a better knowledge of our country. This provides a fun alternative way to play as well. This version is a fun way to learn about America while still playing the classic board game. I plan to make it a regular part of my Fourth of July festivities, but it's great year round.

My favorite feature in this new version of Monopoly is the trivia option. At "Just Visiting" a player has the option of answering a trivia question. If answered correctly, the player may then move his/her token to any property and BUY it. (This feature removes some of the randomness of traditional Monopoly and can really help move the game along.)The "Game Show" feature on the Free Parking space uses trivia questions to give the player the option of actually winning property for free! But if you want Boardwalk (the Washington Monument in this version), it'll take four correct answers in a row. Foregoing your $200 salary when landing directly ON "Go" will allow you the privilege of moving to any non-corner space on the board. Don't want to go to jail? Hire a lawyer for $20 and you MIGHT not have to. The token designs are quite creative and truly "American". My vote: this game is a definite winner for even the most marginal Monopoly fan. I hope you enjoy it. My family and friends do.

This version of the classic Monopoly game adds a few new twists that I found particularly appealing. I won't waste your time explaining the game basics, but rather what is different about this game from the normal version.First off, each group of properties is a part of American genre, from inventions to cultral landmarks (the Washington Monument, Invention of electricity, for example...). On each property card, there is a historical explanation of why the item is significant, adding to a younger person's knowledge of what makes that particular piece special. Second, for the corners, there are cards that can punched out and used, adding new twists like using a "lawyer" function when in jail, or a card that allows a player to go to any unclaimed piece of property if landing on Go (and thus, likely buying it). The money also looks much more like American currnecy than usual, and it just adds to the flavor of playing this version. Your playing pieces of the space shuttle, apple pie, a movie reel, and others add even more to the American feel of this version of the game. At first, I was not enthused about another version of the Monopoly game, having several already, but in this new version I was pleasantly surprised, and look forward to playing this new gmae more than the others.
