Product Description

Have you wanted to get a nice mechanical switch keyboard for your PC, but cannot justify the excessive cost? Monoprice comes to the rescue with this Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Cherry MX Blue keys! This keyboard is designed as a bare-bones, no-frills mechanical board. You don't get a USB hub, or backlighting, or macro programmability. What you do get is a high-quality, durable keyboard using Cherry MX Blue keys at the lowest possible price, without sacrificing quality, of course! Mechanical keyboards use physical switches for each key. The switches have longer travel, yet can register a keystroke without requiring full depression, depending on which type of switch is used. This allows gamers to "double-tap" more easily and allows for faster typing. This keyboard uses the industry leading Cherry MX Blue switches, which require about 50-60 grams actuation force and which provide a physical and audible tactile click at the activation point. The switches are gold plated to prevent corrosion and have a life cycle of over 50 million key presses. Additionally, this mechanical keyboard supports "N-key rollover". Each switch is individually monitored so that each key press is registered properly, even though other keys are being actuated at the same time. Typical membrane keyboards and most mechanical keyboards with a USB interface only support 6-key rollover (maximum 6 keys registering at a time), but this model supports 64-key rollover, which allows for complex gaming combos as well as faster touch typing with fewer errors. Features: Uses Cherry MX Blue switches Gold plated switch contacts Switches rated for over 50 million keystrokes 2 mm keyswitch actuation distance, 4 mm full throw distance Requires 50-60 grams actuation force Cylindrical shaped keytops

Keyboard worked well enough for the first four months, then the "S" key would only work with very hard keypresses.
At that point it needed to be repaired or replaced.
Amazon only offers 30 day return period- so I was three months past that- Monoprice states "1 year warranty" so I called them and was directed to start a case with tech support via email- which I did.
The next day- Monoprice Tech support responded:
"Thank you for contacting us at Monoprice.com. In regards to your inquiry, Since you bought it through amazon the way we handle replacements is by having you set it up through your amazon account. they wont give you any hassle. Thanks again for contacting us here at Monoprice, have a great day!"
Keep in mind that in my original email to Monoprice I explained that I was already 90 days past Amazon's return window.
I called Amazon and they still insisted that the warranty has to go through Monoprice!
I then sent a second email reiterating that Amazon will not take back the four month old keyboard and here's how Monoprice Tech support responded:
"Thank you for contacting us at Monoprice.com. In regards to your inquiry, contact amazon about the 1 year warranty about that item. Thanks again for contacting us here at Monoprice, have a great day!
It was now obvious that:
1) Monoprice "Tech Support" was not going to honor their 1 year warranty on their product if it was purchased through Amazon.
2) Monoprice "Tech Support" didn't understand the simple plain English emails I sent them regarding Amazon's 30 day return window.
3) I was pretty much wasting my time and effort trying to work with Monoprice "Tech Support" via email.

I was looking for a good deal on a mechanical switch keyboard and that's exactly what I got. No extra frills jacking up the price and no compromise on the things that matter.

This keyboard is so solid I feel like I could use it as a club and the action is a dream. Media control buttons? No. USB or headphone ports? No. Backlit keys? Detachable wrist rest? Built in screen? No. No. and Certainly not. This is a keyboard not a Swiss army knife. If you like gadgets and gizmos this is not the keyboard for you. If you want an excellent quality keyboard at a great price then this is just what you are looking for.

For those of you who know your keyboards I've typed on a genuine IBM buckling spring model M before and this might actually be better. It's the same great tactile feedback and delicious clicking sound but with slightly lighter keystrokes. I suppose it depends on the person but for me that means quicker typing and less fatigue.

Gamers should be cautious. I do play games on this and I'm happy but I had to adjust initially because the Cherry MX Blue switches have to come back up higher to disengage than the point where they engage. If you want split second double taps you might consider the Cherry MX Black or Brown though you will have to give up the clicky feel and sound.

The only detail I'm not perfectly happy with is the LEDs in the Num Lock Caps Lock and Scroll Lock indicators. They are so bright it hurt my eyes when stood up and looked straight down at them. I have no idea why they need to be as bright as headlamps but that was easily fixed by a discreet bit of electrical tape which happens to blend in quite nicely with the rest of the design.

I bought this keyboard because it was the cheapest one with Cherry MX Blue switches. These are genuine switches that perform as well as every other Blue keyboard out there. Key blocking happens at about four keys, with 6-key rollover as is the maximum for USB keyboards.

The keyboard itself is well built. Characters are laser-etched onto each key. The three lights for num lock, caps lock, and scroll lock are each illuminated by a bright blue LED. The surface material is the color of dark speckled stone and is covered by a smooth glossy veneer. The backside is plastic, with two hard durable plastic supports at the top and two rubber pads for friction against your table at the bottom. The USB cable is solid and made of thick plastic. It is 5 feet in length.

Would buy again, especially considering the price. If you do not need extra macro or media keys, a USB hub, audio jacks, an extra long cable, backlighting, an LCD panel in place of the numpad, quiet key pressing as with Cherry MX Brown, or wrist rests, I would recommend that you buy this simple and classic keyboard.

I had to wait for this to be delivered but I thought it was well worth the wait. I really like mechanical keyboards and this one was affordably priced and performed nicely. Unfortunately, it has started to malfunction.
when I type "c" it prints "c."
when I type "e" it prints "eo"
when I type "3" it prints "39"
This issue affects 7 different keys so far, making it completely useless.
(and no, I didn't pound on it, pour soft drinks or coffee all over it or drop it in a swimming pool)

Amazon only offers a 30 day return policy on this item, so I'm out of luck there. Monoprice has a 1 year warranty BUT only on products purchased directly from them, so I'm out of luck again.

Other people don't seem to be having this problem, so this must be a rare defect.

MY ADVICE:
If you are going to buy this product, buy it directly from Monoprice and MAKE SURE it comes with a warranty. Hopefully you will have better luck with this item than I did.
