While superb sound quality is the ultimate goal of any home audio system, the realities of budget and even aesthetics often force compromises in sound quality. Well, the time for compromise is over. Now you can have it all - great sound, great looks, small size, and an unbelievably low price. The Monoprice Premium 5.1-Channel Home Theater System surpasses all expectations for sound quality in a small package. The four satellite and the single center speakers each use a 3 polypropylene mid-range driver and a 3/4 aluminum dome tweeter. They can handle up 100 watts of power and have an impedance of 8 ohms. The satellite and center channel speakers handle frequencies from 110Hz to 20KHz 3dB, with the crossover between the mid-range and tweeter drivers set to 3.5KHz. The powered subwoofer features an 8 downward firing speaker driven by a 200 watt amplifier. It handles frequencies from 30Hz to 150Hz (-10dB) and uses a variable crossover from 40-150Hz. The satellites measure only about 6.9 x 4.3 x 4.3 (HWD) and weigh about 2.9 lbs. each, making them easy to mount almost anywhere. The center channel speaker measures about 4.3 x 10.2 x 4.3 (HWD) and weighs 3.0 lbs. Both the satellite and center speakers are equipped with a universal 1/4 threaded insert mounting options and have rear-firing ports, so they sound best when there is some breathing room behind them. The subwoofer is a 12.6 cube and weighs about 20 lbs. It features four large rubber feet, which keep the downward firing driver off the floor. It includes both line and speaker level stereo inputs, so it can be used with any amplifier.

First Impressions: I've watched two movies with these speakers so far, both scifi/action, and HO-LY CRAP. The sound is absolutely amazing. From the music to the explosions, everything is clear but bold. I am not use to surround sound yet, and the quality has tricked my mind several times into thinking someone or something in my house was making a sound behind me. I have a roughly 20' x 15' room and it fills it up nicely, even with all the clutter and decoration in the room. The subwoofer is very powerful, I'm still considering turning it down more and it is already on half power. It caused enough rattle the first time (with ~85% power) for a picture to fall and break the glass - so start low!
I purchased these because of the outstanding review Moskovciak at CNET gave it, and his praise is spot on. I ended up purchasing these directly from Monoprice, and they delivered it on time. Very happy with the purchase.
Pros: Great sound quality - clear voice, thunderous bass, and detailed, layered music Matte finish - some prefer the glossy piano black, but I like the matte finish. It is less distracting Sturdy build quality Single screw mounting Fairly simple setup
Cons: Doesn't come with speaker wire, but they rarely do. Power LED on sub is insanely bright (easy to cover) Honestly, for the price and value, I can't think of anything else.
For those curious, I am using the Pioneer VSX 822-K receiver with these speakers, and I also recommend that.

The sound is unbelievable. Voice reproduction is very good. To take full advantage of these speakers I would recommend getting a receiver with some form of auto calibration. I went through several receivers and at the end chose Denon AVR-300. The combination is perfect. Some entry level receivers will have an auto calibration feature but won't apply much correction to the frequency spectrum and phase according to the acoustic characteristics of your room. One such receiver was Sony DH540. To clarify how good these speakers sound with the Denon after running the auto calibration, I would add that I put my Klipsch F-30 speakers and C-20 centre channel in storage. The Monoprice system provides comparable sound but with slightly better voice delivery for movies. With stereo music it sounds very natural with no exaggeration of certain frequencies. The subwoofer performs very well, blends nicely with the centre and satellite speakers. The system is no longer available at the price I paid for it but even at the current price it is worth buying. I strongly recommend buying this system instead of something that costs 3-4 times as much and is a lot heavier and larger than the Monoprice premium system.

Great sounding speakers, well worth the price. Even if you happen to pay shipping charges.
Pros: - I got a fantastic deal on these for one-ninety with free shipping. - Well packaged with a box within a box. - Great, room filling sound for the price. More than enough for my 14'x14' den with vaulted ceilings. - Three position power switch, Off/Auto/On. Auto seems to work pretty well. - More bass than I expected from an 8" woofer. Maybe not enough to rattle the windows, but just enough to feel. Obviously, this will not shake the whole house, but it does fine for a room of my size. - Very fast shipping. Even having purchased them through a third party (not Amazon or Monoprice). Of course this has always been my experience having made several purchases directly from Monoprice. - Adjustability. Volume control, crossover adjustment and a phase switch. - Printed instructions aren't bad, mostly some nice hints regarding speaker placement to help out people new to setting up a 5.1 system. Although they are missing any information about what screw/bolt size to use for the threaded mounting holes (they are ¼-20). - Nice gold plated, spring-loaded binding posts on the satellites. Too bad they don't accept banana jacks. The speaker level inputs on the subwoofer do take banana jacks.
Cons: - Speaker grills are not removable. Or at least they were stuck on so well I was afraid to pull any harder. From the pictures of this set, it looks like they are removable. Guess I'll have to try and pull harder. Or use something to pry with. (Update 2 Feb 2014: The grill covers are removable. Did have to get something to pry them off with, though. So I guess this is no longer a con.) - Non-removable "Monoprice" logos glued(?) to the grill.Read more ›

This review covers both the Monoprice 10565 (Premium Sound System) and the Monoprice 8247 sound system. This review assumes the 10565 is approximately double the price of the 8247 (as was so when purchased).
Current Setup: I recently purchased a new house and in doing so wanted to quickly setup a inexpensive home theater room. I was able to create a very nice setup using a Vizio 70" E701i-A3 as well as the Monoprice 10565. The picture is excellent and the sound is very, very good. I highly recommend this setup. My theater room is large with a 25' ceiling cathedral which does not appear to impact the 10565's ability to perform.
Previous experience: Of my previous theater systems the best I had was a Bose Acoustimass 10 Series III. It was a decent though pricey theater system which I had to sell while moving. I wanted something that sounded better than or at least equivalent to the experience. The 10565 fits the bill quite nicely, I'd say it is slightly better than the Bose system, which is great because it's 200/1000 = 1/5 of its cost. The Bose does have a better aesthetic appeal and excellent build quality, if I were to close my eyes and listen to both systems, I am confident I would choose the Monoprice premium speakers over the Bose. They have a much better range and can get very loud with little distortion.
Monoprice 10565 VS 8247: For this comparison I used the exact same setup (wire, placement, receiver, room). You can see it in the pictures below. I loved the home theater experience of the 10565 so much and I wanted to try the same brand in another room. I frequently listen to music and play games in my office/loft area, so I decided a 5.1 system should work nicely there as well.Read more ›
