Product Description

Keep your new iPhone 5 safe from the bumps and scrapes of daily use with this Sure Fit PC+TPU Case from Monoprice! This two-piece case consists of an inner TPU bumper and a polycarbonate shell. The bumper fits around the outside edge of your iPhone 5 and the shell fits on the sides and back. This provides a superior, double-level of protection with all the benefits of both the TPU and PC materials. The volume and power buttons are covered with TPU material, which keeps out dirt and dust, yet still allows the controls to be manipulated. There are cutouts for the other controls and connections.

In a world where iPhone cases with fancy packages cost multiple times as much as this guy, the Monoprice is a great bargain to find. The only corner-cutting I saw evidence of was that it comes in a plain plastic baggie with no label or paperwork. As my dad would say, "HK?" (meaning "who cares?"), the case fits well and will do the same job as more expensive cases.

The primary drawback I found is that the hole for the headphone jack is narrow and neither my Etymotic nor Audio-Technica headphone plugs fit through it. One could cut the case with a utility knife to make more room, I think. Other than that, you've got a glossy black back that gets a ton of fingerprints on it, but I just scuffed mine up with sandpaper (hey, it's an inexpensive case - I didn't buy it for it's looks!).

Finally, the case does add some bulk to the iPhone because it actually extends past the bottom of the phone (it doesn't wrap flush to the bottom where the speakers are). Instead of having holes in the bottom of the case to line up with the iPhone speakers, the case goes past the bottom edge and has holes on the face to route the sound up toward the face of the phone. No idea if this is any better than other options, but it does mean there's a gap between the case and the bottom of the phone. It's not problem with the Lightning connector, however, since it plugs straight in and pulls straight out (unlike the old connector where you had to pinch the sides to release it from the phone).

I bought this case because the current Best iPhone 5 Case in the World was sold out, but I don't think I'll replace the Monoprice any time soon.

I can't use my headphone jack when the case is on the phone. Why would that be acceptable design? And why would the Wirecutter recommend this product? Disappointed.

I bought this case on recommendation from a reputable tech site. First I want to get out the way, for what you pay, this case is remarkable. I think it could be better, however, but it all depends on what you like and look for in a protective case for your phone. My personal preference is a matte finish and I know this case has "gloss" in its title, but I just think it is way too "shiny" and I feel scratches too easily showing marks after only one day of use with my phone. Granted, this thing is made to protect but I don't think it "shows off" my new phone. It just makes it look dingy with the wear and finger prints which are attracted like they're going out of style. So, if you're okay with the "candy" like finish similar to the $30 speck cases, by all means this is your best alternative.

Some notes about the case itself:

+ I actually really like the dual layer case structure. You put on a tough band which sits nicely on top of your glass or screen protector and once the glossy outer shell is in place the case feels bulletproof.

+ The design of the bottom of this case filters the sound from the speakers towards you, making songs a bit louder (not better) but clearer. This is also nice when watching videos as you can more clearly understand voices and sounds even if the volume is at lower sounds so you don't have to turn it up to eleven.

- Along the lines of the bottom design, I didn't realize how bulky this case makes your phone. I've rocked the iPhone 5 previously in a snap on "barely there" case and liked the slim profile. This case makes it feel as thick or thicker as an iPhone 4 in a snap case. This can be jarring for some. Of course its smaller than an Otterbox so your opinion counts here.

Overall, I'm on the fence about this case. I'll continue to use it for a while and see how it fares, but I feel I'll most likely go back to my slimmed down snap cases.

They good thing about this case is that it's very cheap. If you plan to leave it on your iPhone all the time, it may even work for you as it adds a decent amount of protection.

If you plan to occasionally take your iPhone out of the case, don't get this. The 2 pieces are hard to fit together well, and I feel like I'll break it every time. Also, the cutouts for the Lightning connector and headphone jack are extremely tight, meaning most 3rd party chargers won't work, and only very thin headphone cables will fit.

Unless price is a huge factor, find another case.
