"Monsieur Lecoq" is a novel divided into two volumes. This is Volume 1 aka "The Inquiry". Set in 19th century France, the story follows an ambitious rookie detective as he stakes his career on solving a triple homicide. A suspect is caught but nobody knows exactly what happened, why, or even the prisoner's identity. What's worse, the clever suspect has an even cleverer accomplice on the outside.

This is an exciting read as Lecoq matches wits with his two brilliant adversaries. I loved Lecoq's meticulous examinations of the crime scene - like an episode of CSI if it were set in the 1800's. Volume 1 is the detective half of the novel. The story concludes in Volume 2 The Honor of the Name which lays the foundation of the crime.

Published in 1868, "Monsieur Lecoq" is said to have been an influence on Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Fans of detective fiction are sure to enjoy.

This is a must-read if you like detective fiction. It established the genre.

Twisting plots, action, and romance mark this one. A nobody who becomes the best - and first - at sniffing out clues, identities, plots, and criminals.

Don't miss this one, then read ALL of Gaboriau's novels.

One of the seminal works in the early detective novel canon by the most influential writer between Poe and Doyle, this classic tale introduces Lecoq (like Poe's Dupin , Balzac's Vaturin, and Hugo's Jean Valjean suggested by the first real detective Eugene Francois Vidoq). Gaboriau was not only popular in his day, but a great influence on Conan Doyle (Holmes pays Lecoq a backhanded compliment in The Hound of the Baskervilles). While much of the genre of the era was more along the lines of Wilkie Collins, Joseph LeFanu, and Mary Elizabeth Brandon, Gaboriau features a continuing detective who has much in common with later sleuths like Arsene Lupin and Gaston Leroux's Rouletabile. Not all Gaboriau's novels are detective stories, nor do they feature Lecoq and his mentor, but he is one of the greats in the genre, and still quite readable today.

A likeable, bumbling character with lessons to be learned along the way. Good, easy going writing with a little twist to the ending.

I found it to be a very slow moving story. I did appreciate that it was a very clean story. One that any person could read without having their minds filled with garbage.
