Book Description

Rangoon 1930. Winsome, raised in a convent and newly married to a man she barely knows, is full of anticipation as she travels towards the great metropolis.

She does not know that Rangoon, this city cradled in the arms of rivers, is about to be torn apart in the struggle between its ancient owners and new masters. That it will seduce her, possess her senses and change utterly her notion of what kind of woman she can be.

When she meets Jonathan - when the monsoon comes - she begins to find out.

'Evokes a viscerally beautiful world and a heady journey into the consequences of love. A wonderful read.' Alice Pung

The Monsoon Bride is a first novel from Australian writer Michelle Aung Thin. It travels deceptively familiar territory - Rangoon, 1930, you can hear the ceiling fans turn and the English overlords squirm. Aung Thin tells the tale of Winsome, a convent girl who has been assigned a husband - Desmond. Desmond is determined to rise in Rangoon society - but he is doomed to be second rate. Winsome becomes involved with Jonathan - Desmond's supervisor - but for him, she is just a 'monsoon bride'. Beautifully and erotically written, the novel places the reader at the heart of Rangoon with all its exotic scents and sounds. Perhaps a little slow at first, but once the rhythm of the city takes you over, the book is enchanting. Recommended. Look out for the photographer, Daw Sein, who is similar in feel to Billy Kwan in Christopher Koch's fine The Year of Living Dangerously.
