Book Description

April 1, 1999
A unique mix of lyrical prose and poetry, Monsoons challenges cultural and religious myths while reflecting the soulful grieving process of a woman for her father. Monsoons focuses on defining moments in the characters' lives which ultimately lead them toward destruction or peace. Alternately realistic and hopeful, each piece focuses on the often desperate longing of the human condition to connect with others.

5.0 out of 5 stars An articulate Wise Woman opens her heart., May 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Monsoons (Paperback)
Laraine Herring's collection of short fiction and poetry tugs at the heart of anyone who has experienced loss and strikes the "ah-ha" chords of recognition for those who've ever dreamt that the world might have been different if only history had been recorded from the feminine perspective and she does so without being preachy. Her writing does not lean on politics and she is not afraid to tackle some "touchy" subjects such as sex, religeon and death. Ms. Herring's prose is resonant with imagery. Via the actions and thoughts of clearly wrought characters, the writer leads us through the familar territory of childhood fears, adolescent drama, and the quirky traumas, hopes and dreams that make us achingly human. Ms. Herring explores varied locations and situations ranging from the Garden of Eden (from Eve's perspective) to the haunting and haunted front porch of an old Southern house. This writer paints a world in which we are made both comfortable and uneasy at the same time. She accomplishes this through honesty, craft and a real voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for husbands or boyfriends., November 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Monsoons (Paperback)
Monsoons reaches out and touches the heart. Ms. Herring writes with a depth and passion rarely seen these days. At first glance it seems to be a "woman's book," but after reading it, I would have to say this is a "must read" for any man trying to understand the hearts and souls of women.

5.0 out of 5 stars Into the storm and back, June 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Monsoons (Paperback)
Ms. Herring is one of the best new authors on the scene today. Her collection of writings- both short stories and prose- at once electrify the senses and touch the innermost core of our being. She writes with a passion and ease so haunting, it must come from being an "old soul". Ms. Herring leads us into the very center of the monsoon of life, then leads us back to safety.
