So, I'm a big Tron fan. Duh. You kind of HAVE to be to drop this much cash on what basically amounts to a speaker. All in all, this thing sounds good. But here is the rub, and the rub is pretty huge:

The app (which ostensibly opens up new worlds of control and Tron-themed interface awesomeness) is junk. At least, for the time being (more on this later). The instruction manual for this dock indicates that the app includes an equalizer, alarm clock, and choosable visualizer themes, presumably Tron-related. IN FACT. Take a look at the picture of this item. See the funky Tron-esque hexagons graphic on the iPhone screen? Looks cool, right? Same graphic is on the box. Guess what? It's nowhere to be found. Not in the app.

The app in question is the Disney Tron app, not a "Monster Visualizer" app as advertised. So basically every time you want to use the lighting effects on the speaker (where it pulsates to the music and whatnot), you have to open the app (which is designed for landscape use, so the Tron and Disney logos appear sideways when the phone/pod is docked), navigate to the Visualizer (the menu in question is also inconveniently sideways), and select the visualizer. But here's were it gets even better. Their "visualizer" is basically a very plain looking lightning backgound. Their iPod interface is an extremely dumbed down version of... well, the ipod interface. You can select only playlists. You can't select podcasts from this interface. It is for this reason that I avoid the "pulsing lights" functionality because the non-impressiveness of the lighting effect does not make up for the absolute pain-in-the-rear head-cocking drama required to effect it.

I will start by saying that I love this audio dock. The look makes my inner geek very happy and my ears enjoy the quality of sound coming out of it.

However, I would have hoped that it would do a little more out of the box. In order to get the LEDs to change in time with the music, you MUST have an app from the iTunes store on your device and it must be active. There is nothing wrong with that, but I would have liked it to be able to so some simple LED patterns without the app or when I don't feel like having the app running, and then give me MORE options when I do have the app running.

I am giving it a 4 out of 5 purely based on what's missing. The Tron Audio Dock is a solid 5 of 5 for everything else, especially sound quality.

Simply put, the Monster Tron dock is just a really cool dock to look at, whether you're a Tron fan or not. For me, one of the highlights of this dock was the sleek, minimalistic design that would fit nicely at home, whether that be in Flynn's apartment, or at your own. Once you unbox it, the dock itself is pretty intuitive, providing the user with a cool light show once you connect your iPhone into the grid (ok, end of the line for my lame Tron-related puns!).

Speaking of the 'light show', however, it is unfortunate that the many of the functionalities boasted on the packaging as of writing seem to be severely lacking, making the purchase of this similar to subscribing to a beta test of the product. There is no option to choose from a variety of sequences for the light show (unless you count static and pulsing to the rhythm), there are no varied backgrounds that display on your iphone during the lightshow (there is only one, unless you count the 'clock'), and while the previous two may be nitpicky, there is no way to deny the glaring omission of any kind of 'alarm clock' feature; a feature so prominently featured in advertisements and on the packaging itself.

With that said, the dock itself is once again an undeniable thing of beauty, assuming minimalistic and futuristic designs are your kind of thing. Seeing it lighting up a darkened or dimly lit room almost makes up for the 'beta-test' state of the app, giving you a nice bluish tint that lights up a room just so, making it perfect as a night light.

It is perhaps then only natural that the dock loses some of that shine (pun intended) in a well-lit room, looking very bland once a white glaze replaces the blue-glow.

I really wish that I could offer a more comprehensive review of this dock. It's beautiful, the packaging was lovely.

But. But, but, but. When I buy an iPod dock, I expect it to work with my iPod. I downloaded the TRON app, but even after synching it, my iPod Touch (2nd gen) throws up an "accessory not supported by iPod Touch" every time I plug it into the dock. Dismissing the error message results in the two devices not interfacing, so no charging, no sound through the speakers, nothing.

Two stars for looks, minus three for this thing working like it's supposed to. As a music fan and a die-hard TRON fan, I am very disappointed.

EDIT: 3/2/12 -- Updated to 4 stars (used to be 2)

For some reason, the dock suddenly started recognizing my iPod and ceased giving me the error message. I'm not sure why, it's the same iPod and I didn't change how I interfaced the two machines, but it's working now and that's what matters.

The dock itself is lovely, although the blue color is not as intense as photos would suggest. It actually sounds very nice, probably not up to audiophile standards but to my uneducated ears it's great. I also own a JBL Radial, which I feel has slightly superior sound, but I enjoy both of them.

Once you get the app to work, the Visualizer is a nice extra. Unfortunately, as many have said, the app is the weakest point of the whole system, and unfortunately it's also necessary to get all the features of the dock. It takes a while to get the app to load up, and if the iPod goes to sleep or you turn the system off while the app is running, it freezes and you are forced to reload from your home screen. There are minimal EQ options, and the promised third visualization theme has not been released.
