5.0 out of 5 stars Obsessed!
I really am. My son and I play anytime we get free time. Personally, I am a big fan of dragons, so obviously this was a natural pick for me. One of the best games I have ever played and the dragons look great.
Just sell all your other games here on Amazon, because since I bought this game I have played almost nothing else... 460 hours and still going...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth playing unless you have A LOT OF FREE TIME
This game is way too hard... and I wouldn't recommend it to someone who doesn't have hours to invest on it. The beasts are really hard to kill in this game from the start. I felt that it would have been better to have easier prays at the beginning. It's just too hard and too time consuming to make any progress in this game. That made this game not worth playing for me...

It is a skill based game, your hunters attributes dont really change (yes there are things that can enhance your stamina or attack stregth etc), however you dont level up like other games. the game is ultra realistic and you really have to learn how to kill these things. Yes, the biggest downside to the game is the camera, you will read this through all the serious reviews because its difficult to control especially during the battle sequences when it would have been nice to incorporate some auto camera funtionality. But that would be my only complaint. To compliment the game, make sure you go buy the WIFI Max... it allows you to network with up to 3 other players at a time on line to fight through some of the more difficult baddies that cannot easily be solod.

Some other online reviews state 1000's of items and 100's of monsters... quite a bit exagerated but there are hundreds of items and probably 30+ monster types. Some of the missions are redundant but no game is perfect. If you want to enjoy beautiful graphic scenery and the thrill of the hunt of mythic creatures, then give it a shot. well I could go on and on, I just wanted to put something up here as a tribute to this Hall of Fame game... good luck, time for me to bag an Fatalis... :)

Be sure to look for Monster Hunter Freedom 2 in September '07!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Monster Hunter, June 6, 2006
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Monster Hunter Freedom (Video Game)
Indeed, as the title says, this game is about Monster Hunting. For the first time on a PSP, the player is offered a respectivly wide range of customization for their character which they can create in the very beginning of this game.

In my opinion, Monster Hunter is indeed one of the few extremely good games out for PSP at this moment. However, this game is not for a person who wishes to kill everything in their path. There are, at times, moments where you HAVE to be paitent with what you are doing, or you will die a very horrible and annoying death. Your character does get tired, and can pass out causing the forefit of a Quest. Also, the fighting system is slower than a hack and slash, more realistic then most games where your character will slash and hack, but get tired in the process.

I highly reccommend this game to those who love to kill monsters and like the real life fighting system as they play. However, those who like face paced fighting games, i don't believe this would be for you. Happy Gaming!

5.0 out of 5 stars a hardcore gamers dream, June 5, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Monster Hunter Freedom (Video Game)
Monster hunter Freedom is a hardcore gamer dream and a casual gamers nightmare. Monster hunter Freedom set you into a pre- historic type world as a life of a hunter. before you start playing you can customize your your hunter with a decent amount of faces, hairs styles and colors, skin color and vocies. also the option of making a male and female hunters. after you made your hunter, you'll wake in your house ready to start you life as a hunter. Now here's hurdle number one thats as far as the "story" is going to take you. you must be a self-motivated to play this game at it's full potential. The first 11 missions you play are mainly the tutorial mission it also where it will seperate the hardcore from the casual/non-gamer becase the game dosen't offer instant gratification you have to "work for it" so to speak learn the area to find herbs and berries, killing monsters for food and bones and learning how to use your weapons there no auto lock for targting monsters so you have to learn how to hit the monster on you own. there are mainly 5 differnt weapon types(Sword and Sheild,Great Sword,Lance,Hammer,Bow Gun) and 1 "secret" type(Duel Swords) each with there strengths and weaknesses. If your still playing after the tutorial mission be prepare to be hooked you'll start to fight boss type monster call wyverns these beast will have you blood pumping and fingers shaking as to take down these monsters of inceasing ferocity.Kill wyverns and carving there body parts to make stronger weapons and armor is extremely rewarding as it feel you work hard for something that you can be proud of so to speak. If you can play pass the slow but necessary start monster hunter freedom will reward you and your friends with well over 300+ hours of gameplay.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Own., February 22, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Monster Hunter Freedom (Video Game)
Monster Hunter Freedom is by far the best game I have played for the psp, and is in itself a reason to own the psp, in my opinion. The graphics are as good as I've ever seen on a handheld system, from detailed environments to believable wildlife wandering around.

Although it is technically an RPG, there is really no storyline as such. MHF plays more like a fantasy hunting game, but don't let the hunting game stigma deter you.

You have a few choices on weapon types that you can use, and this actually makes a tangible difference on gameplay. The great sword, for example, will do plenty of damage but one has to master striking then moving out of range of your target wyvern, while the crossbow guns have different tactics entirely. The gameplay gets deeper from there as you explore the benefits of elemental weapons compared to straight damage, and how sharp a weapon needs to be to penetrate the wyvern's armor.

The weapons and armor both are visible on your character, and both are very well done. There is quite a selection of both weapons and armor, many with very creative and cool looking designs, and I found myself motivated to make as many weapons as I could just to see what nice combinations of armor and weapons I could cook up, visually speaking.

Most of the game is spent mastering the habits and tactics of each specific beast you must face. It's for this reason I said it plays more like a big game hunter type of game than a traditional RPG (that and the lack of a backstory).

The game is clearly designed to be heavily multiplayer, though I've put in 100+ hours of fun single player so far, with lots left to do. Capcom elected not to have an infrastructure multiplayer (that is, a standard system for finding other people to play with), so you'll have to convince a buddy to buy the game and use the adhoc mode.

If you manage to do that, though, you'll be pleased to find that the depth of combat in the game goes even deeper when you start mixing in teamwork and various weapon combinations.

All in all, the game has a truly epic feel with some awesome battles in it, that shooters just can't replicate with scores of enemies. You get a nice feeling of accomplishment when a dragon many times your size lies defeated at your feet.

I would recommend this game without reservation to any owner of the psp who likes either action or roleplaying games at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just no fun at times, December 22, 2006
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Monster Hunter Freedom (Video Game)
Monster Hunter is a hardcore game, which means it is one of those games that can only appeal to select few and people who like big monsters. Even though that this game is an RPG, it does not feature a hardcore plot, emotional overlords, or that epic feel that a traditional RPG has. INstead, it focuses on capturing and slaying monsters, and it's a straightforward game, with none of those gloss of a RPG such as Final Fantasy. But is still and RPG, but an RPG that is all about killing.

Monster Hunter is such a overwhelming game though, because it's definitly not for the average gamer. IT's overwhelmingly deep, with a least 100 weapons and a million ways to customize your gear, it sounds more complex that most games. IT's absolutly gorgeous though, as you will fight huge monsters in dense jungles, huge rivers, and more. The game is simply beautiful, and the big screen surely helps the graphics shine in many ways possible. With sound effects peppered everywhere and it's epic music, there is more than enough to label the presentation divine, even though it still can't match the presentation of Final Fantasy.

However though, there are still some problems with the game as well. THe game is really really hard, and without your friends, battling the huge dragons is nearly impossible. THe worst part is there is no online play or gamesharing, so if your friends does not have a copy of the game, it's tough luck. The other problem is the camera, it get's really annoying fast because you have to pan the camera as well. When the game is so hard that you keep passing out, the game just does not have any fun. Challenge it may be, the challenge turns into an anger tester. One of the boxes for the game used, I saw, was completly destroyed. If you don't have patience (don't feel bad, I sometimes don't), then you will not like this game.

IT's too bad, because overall, this game is a great game. The hack and slash gameplay is addicting when facing lesser monsters (like hunting down 20 raptors), and the game is overall engrossing. It's not without it's faults, but I do reccomend this game. Just be aware of the headaches the game can give you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best RPG Period!!!, May 7, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Monster Hunter Freedom (Video Game)
Monster Hunter freedom is probably the best game I have ever played.

Main Scheme
You are a rookie hunter at the start of the game. As you slay more monsters and beat more missions you gain stature inthe village. Also when you beat more wyverns(dragons) you are able to make better armour and weapons. This game is huge I have 125 hours and i'm only about 1/4 percent done, so this game can last a very long time. This game however does not have a story line but rather you are able to do more as the game progresses.
10/10

Grafics
The grafics are insane!! They are crisp and clean and are absulutely stunning you won't find a better looking game anywhere. The cutscenes for new monsters are great! So far my favorite is the khezu(5 star village chief quest)
10/10

Sound
The sound is awesome!! Every monster makes diffrent noises, the coolest is by far the wyverns. The noises range from roars to footfalls to clinks of your armour and the slash of your weapons. The music is great to but they play a lot of the same songs. The only flaw is that sometimes the roars cut out if you are to far away from the creature.
10/10

Fighting
Unlike most RPG's the game is not focused on leveling up but rather on skill and strategy. To defeat certain wyverns you need particular itams though most of them are easy to get. Although you only have three attacks per weapon, you have 5 weapon categorys with 100's of diffrent weapons. The creatures have many diffrent attacks and attributes so you might need a diffrent weapon for each.
10/10

Camera
The camera is not as bad as everyone claims. I was thinking of not buying it but I discovered it wasn't that bad. The only flaw is that if your camera angle is in the wall it makes it hard to see anything. But trie it out for yourself before you judge.
8/10

4.0 out of 5 stars I expected nothing from this game..., January 4, 2008

This review is from: Monster Hunter Freedom (Video Game)
but was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it actually was. I had heard that it received bad reviews after purchasing it for a trip I was going on. I ended up playing it and found it difficult to put down. Game play is fairly straight forward. Equip yourself with the proper equipment, select the mission then go kill everything you see. Pros and Cons:

Pros:
1. Has a fairly decent selection of character parts to customize your character to your wants.
2. Weaponry customization and upgrading is surprisingly vast. I had no idea so many weapons were going to be available.
3. Mission availability is very nice.
4. Graphics are pretty unbelievable for the PSP.
5. Items are everywhere. And harvesting kills is a cool feature.

Cons:
1. Controls are kind of unintuitive.
2. Targeting system is nonexistent
3. Stats and mission requirements are fairly difficult to understand. Lots of reading required in order to understand what it is you are supposed to do.

All in all this game is very worthwhile. I'm going to purchase part 2 now simply because this one was that much fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome game!, December 30, 2006
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Monster Hunter Freedom (Video Game)
Monster Hunter is an outstanding game. In the game you start out as a normal villager but start to become a great monster hunter as the game proceedes. The game is action/adventure type so you don't sit around and let other people do the work for you, you really have to put in some elbow grease. In the beginning of the game the first thing you should do is get to know your villagers. most are nice but some are just chatterboxes.
Anyway this game has some outstanding graphics. The surrounding atmosphere is just beautiful and everything looks so realistic that you feel you are in the game. The graphics aren't the only great things. The online mode is also cool because you can communicate with other people and challenge them to quests. So if you like action games and you aren't affraid to socialize online this,in my opinion,is the game to get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the PS2 Monster Hunter, July 2, 2006
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Monster Hunter Freedom (Video Game)
Ive played the PS2 Monster Hunter for a total of 80 hours now. But now theres Monster Hunter Freedom for PSP. Its everything the PS2 Monster Hunter was and more. Its like a sequel to Monster Hunter for PS2. It has everything that game had (including the quests) It has the same town plus an extra one, it has the same quests plus 500 more (no joke) it has about 100 more monsters plus all the ones from the previuos game and much more. It is my favorite PSP game out of about 20 PSP games so far. I warn you just like all the previous reviews this game is hard and at some points you have to be patient... very patient. Theres over 100 different types of armor. Lots of combinations of items. Many more zones. Overall this is the longest and funnest game for PSP that I have played. So go get it today because it ROCKS!!!
