5.0 out of 5 stars Very Cute Book
I am a HUGE Horror fan, so when I stumbled upon this book, I was intrigued. Well I can now say it is a very fun read, and I read the whole book in one sitting. The book thoroughly goes every possible monster from every possible, showing tactics to overthrow and conquer the beasts and rewards that one may reap from it. All in All a fun read.

In the way of (humorous) survivalist handbooks, this one falls pretty flat. This hardbound gothic looking book presents a variety of monsters for which you could... well... umm.. hunt. The book is broken into two sections, Cryptozoology (legendary creatures) and Cryptohoplology (legendary weapons & armor). The author presents a listing of monsters with a description, killing method, weaknesses, strengths, possible souvenirs, and minor literary references. Unfortunately, there's a lot of repetitiveness between the description and killing method for each entry. There seems to be pretty much three 'killing methods': melee combat, ranged combat, and imolation through fire. It's pretty much the same in every listing. The weapons section is a little better and the author is well researched enough in mythologies.

Listing of included creatures:
Basilisk Centaur Chimera Cyclops Djinn
Dragon Fairy Ghoul Golem Gorgon
Griffin Harpy Hellhound Hydra Kraken
Manticore Merman Minotaur Mummy Pegasus
Roc Sasquatch Scorpionman Siren Sphinx
Troll Vampire Wendigo Werewolf Zombie

Amongst the weaponry & armor are Excalibur, Mjolnir, Achilles' Armor, Kusanagi, Blue Blade, and others.

The book had potential, maybe some humor would have helped but ,for me, it fell flat. The cover looks great, it's very quick reading, and from the mythology side it is interesting if brief.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wish I hadn't wasted my money, August 8, 2009

This review is from: Monster Hunter's Handbook (Paperback)
I was sorely disappointed by this book. I was hoping for this book to be more encyclopedic, in other-words, closer to a bestiary, but what I got was something I could have thrown together in grade school. The illustrations look like something out of a childrens book, and writing is boring and almost could be described as 'no duh information' (a phrase coined by a high school friend). As for the book's humor...there isn't any. It's plainly written and reminds me of my own writing and trust me that is not a good thing. If it wasn't for the cover looking good on my shelf this book wouldn't be worth its single star.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a Good Read, But Not If You Want To Die!, July 21, 2010
Not being an experienced monster hunter myself I decided to purchase this book in hopes of dealing with some dragons that were living in my yard. It's got the information but I can't exactly seem to find any of the materials that the book suggests. Like a weapon that can cut through dragon scale, or this Greek Fire that is mentioned so much in on other pages. Any how, the dragons nearly ate my arm off during combat when I tried to use my knife on them. I was (of course) aware of the fire but the incredibly fast speed of the dragon I was not. Sadly the book fails to mention the basics about a monster itself and jumps straight to killing it with impossible means.

I say go hunt these monsters on your own with some of the knowledge the book delivers and learn the rest through experience. Happy hunting!

I am now off to find this wepon called Gram or something...

1.0 out of 5 stars They say not to judge a book by the cover..., April 10, 2009

...and that rule is never more true than it is in the case of "The Monster Hunter's Handbook". The book itself is hardback with classic gold piping immediately making this book appear as if it were a classic. Claiming to instruct a 'hunter' how to save mankind from "Vampires, Zombies, Hellhounds, and Other Mythical Beasts" this was a positive purchase. That was my first mistake by judging this book by it's outward appearance. Upon opening the first few pages I couldn't help but think [...] for a class project. Think about what you know about vampires, for example. Garlic, sunlight, crosses, holy water and BOOM!! there's a chapter straight from the book already. On the bright side, books like this do inspire potential writers such as myself by proving that yes, truly anyone can throw some crap on paper and have it published. In conclusion, you may want to avoid this product at all costs as I'm even positive the seeming [...] failed the class. This book is a collection of vague Hollywood-esque ideas jotted down in a pretty package.

Possibly too difficult a read for those seeking a good laugh, whilst they are really against hunting, weapons, and monsters. This is a worthy reference work for those of us who revel in the sport of the hunt. As it become more and more difficult to find places and beasts to hunt, monsters are still unprotected, Vampires may still be staked, Hellhounds can have buckets of ice cold water thrown on them, and so forth. I believe that professor Amin's work is insufficiently appreciated. As Brooks pointed out in his classic work on Zombies, we have never doubted that there is a day when the 'dead will rise' (and the Prayer Book version 'the Sea shall give up her dead'. This is equally true of Monsters and for the doubters one need only note that the "Bible" (all versions, regardless of persuasion, beliefs or sect) confirms it.
