3.0 out of 5 stars Promising Ideas
The authors have promising ideas about self-help for women. Based on the advertising and reviews, maybe my expectations were too high. Maybe its just me, but something about the tone, style, pitch, attitude or whatever you call it, struck me as pushy or arrogant or over-hyped. Perhaps in a superficial way. Other cognitive therapy workbooks seem a bit more realistically...

5.0 out of 5 stars Free yourself from lies that control your life, February 11, 2003
This review is from: Monster Lies: A Woman's Guide to Controlling Her Destiny (Hardcover)
"Monster Lies: A Woman's Guide to Controlling Her Destiny" is an excellent guide to finding the "Lies" that control our destiny as well as uncovering ways to regain control. It begins by identifying the twelve most common "lies" that people often come to accept as truth. Each chapter then takes one of those lies and examines it in detail from how to identify it to determining how it affects your life to a pathway to freedom and choice.

Have you come to accept any of the following lies as truth? The Doomesday Lie says that if nothing ever changes then what is the point of trying? The Stressor Lie says that you have no control over what happens to you. The Perfecto Lie says that you have to do things perfectly the first time so don't try anything new. The Scarcity Lie says that you should hoard what you have and never enjoy them because they may not be there tomorrow. The Satisfaction Lie says that you shouldn't ask others for anything but settle for what you can do yourself. The Experteaser Lie says that you should not trust yourself or your opinion but rely on other experts. The Yardstick Lie says that you have to measure up to how other people measure you. The Stuck-in-the-mud Lie says that you should be so busy helping others that you are unable to live your own life. The Clairvoyant Lie says that people should know how you feel and respond appropriately without your telling them. The Assumption Lie says that you can make assumptions about other people even if you don't know them. The Sandman Lie says that you should just relax and accept everything and give up trying to change anything. The Worrywart Lie says that you should worry about every little detail of what might possibly happen no matter how remote the possibility.

If any of those descriptions sound familiar to you, if any of them describe you, then you owe it to yourself to read this book. The authors provide a clear, workable path to free yourself from the power of these lies and put yourself back in control of your life. The format is not only designed for the individual reader but is also excellent for small discussion groups. It is a highly recommended read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Magic, November 7, 2002
By
This review is from: Monster Lies: A Woman's Guide to Controlling Her Destiny (Hardcover)
This book is simply amazing and a "must read" for anyone who has ever been crippled by the fear of failure. I had the privilege of personally meeting Jennifer Webb while attending a business management seminar, which she instructed. She is real; having personally walked the walk, her triumph and success are among her credentials, and the reason I read her book.

I asked her what clicked in her life to propel her from where she was to where she is now (which I am sure is only somewhere on the way to where she plans on ending up)? Jennifer mentioned that she had read some enlightened books. I was hoping she'd say something like that so that I could go out and buy it! But, recently it came to me that she already had it! And, as soon as she stopped believing what other people said she couldn't do, she did it!

Now I have an enlightened book, yours! This a great book, great story. The techniques can be used by both women and men; personally or professionally. It's like magic, the moment the light comes on. Thanks for the inspiration.

Maybe its just me, but something about the tone, style, pitch, attitude or whatever you call it, struck me as pushy or arrogant or over-hyped. Perhaps in a superficial way. Other cognitive therapy workbooks seem a bit more realistically helpful to me. The aggressive advertising left me disappointed with the actual book. I find overly optimistic, simplistic hype to be a general problem in psychology today. More time and energy seem to be spent marketing a book than writing it. The result can be de-motivating. Monster Lies is an OK book, just not great in the way the promo proclaims.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome self-help book, July 9, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Monster Lies: A Woman's Guide to Controlling Her Destiny (Hardcover)
This is an excellent self-help book, unlike others I've read. It's as if you're writing in your journal and working through all the hang-ups we often have. I'd even recommend it for men! It's an easy, delightful read. The authors' stories are very real and you find yourself relating to them. There are exercises throughout the book which are invaluable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A guide to psychologically energizing women, September 9, 2002
This review is from: Monster Lies: A Woman's Guide to Controlling Her Destiny (Hardcover)
Collaboratively Franz and Jennifer Webb, Monster Lies: A Woman's Guide To Controlling Her Destiny is a "reader friendly" self-help book that teaches the women to identify the deceptions that society and their own minds tend to play on them. From the "doomsday" lie that nothing will ever change or get better, to the "sandman" lie that it's better to just pretend everything is OK and sleepwalk through life rather than wake up, pay attention, or take action, Monster Lies is a guide to psychologically energizing women and pushing them to live their lives to the fullest. Highly recommended for both individual study and women's group discussions, sample fill-in-the-blank exercises throughout help prepare the reader to face new challenges with a clear head and an open heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Empowerment, July 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Monster Lies: A Woman's Guide to Controlling Her Destiny (Hardcover)
Beyond just the philosophy/psychology of women's cultural issues, personal exercises and journaling opportunities are given and really centered the book on MY life. This is what really impressed me.

Be prepared to answer the hard questions...this book is about why we think the way we do and how that thought process can sometimes be our worst enemy. But answers to these questions are the best tools for change. No book can change my life, but this one teches me HOW I CAN CHANGE MY OWN!!

This review is from: Monster Lies: A Woman's Guide to Controlling Her Destiny (Hardcover)
This book gave me simple tools to help begin improving my life immediately! I really enjoyed the realistic approach; it made me feel like I was having a conversation with people I know. I'm telling all of my friends (women AND men) to buy this book...and if they don't, I think that I'll get it for them for Christmas! We all have these "monsters" stopping us from getting what we want in life, now I know how to control my own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, December 7, 2008
By
This review is from: Monster Lies: A Woman's Guide to Controlling Her Destiny (Hardcover)
This book goes into many details of self defeating issues and beliefs many of us seem to have in different areas of our lives. It categorizes and titles them for easy understanding and puts them into simple forms helping see how they effect self image and behavior. Which in turn effects our lives and our relationships. So many(maybe most) of our self thoughts(images) are from wrong teaching or those that just didn't know any better and we by default and habit have incorporated them into our thinking and feeling patterns. This book helps identify what is true reality rather than our perceived reality and how to change our thinking habits and behavior to not be trapped by these lies anymore. Easy read and practical for those really wanting to uncover their self defeating behavior. Good for both men and woman. I am a man and purchased this book for my girlfriend and read it and it helped me understand much of myself, my girlfriend and people in general. I now have more love and patience towards myself,my girlfriend and all of mankind due to my understanding of some of the why's and wherefore's. I always felt people who deserved love the least, should be the one's to get it the most, and this book helped me understand and support that belief even more.
