NEEDLEFREAK,

Here's where it all began (well, almost... Monster Magnet had two self-released cassettes prior) for this heavy acid-bad freak amalgam from Red Bank, New Jersey. Huge, psychedelically demented riffs coated in a vicious layer of reverb makes for fun for the whole family. Heil the Bull God!

Early fury from psychedelic masters,

This EP offers extreme Monster Magnet fans a glimpse of their original sounds. Even if you own every album, from SPINE OF GOD to POWERTRIP (including the ingeniously insane 25...TAB), there is still much to be gained by purchasing this cd. The alternate version of NOD-SCENE alone makes the cd worth while (a whole different guitar solo and style of vocals), not to mention the otherwise unavaible and totally chaotic tracks FREAK SHOP USA and LIZARD JOHNNY. However, let the buyer beware, that SNAKE DANCE and TRACTOR do not sound any different, and MURDER is in fact available on the POWERTRIP album, but is re-named. If you are but a casual fan of Monster Magnet, I would suggest getting either SUPERJUDGE or SPINE OF GOD first. But if you are the avid fan that I am, you will be more then satisfied with this purchase.

Cannot even believe this 1990 release is still available.Must've been reissued. This is the hard-to-find(well,in stores anyway)six track EP that Monster Magnet had put out as their very first CD.Duration,27:43.It's a good EP,with the better cuts being the ass-kicking "Snake Dance","Tractor"(they've done this tune before during their live shows a few years back)and the seven-minute rocker "Nod Scene".Should be in every Monster Magnet's fan collection.

Bullgod 1990,

A brilliant debut EP following two self-released cassettes--the band was definitely on the more lysergic end of the same trip Mudhoney was taking around this time. I should say that both "Snake Dance" and "Tractor" are different than any later versions they recorded. "Tractor" was taken from an earlier 7" (that also contains the same version of "Murder" found on this EP) but this song was radically changed for its inclusion on "Powertrip," (even the band lineup was different by 1998). "Snake Dance" is also a rougher version than that found on "Spine of God." If you're interested in the real deal Bullgod, this is a good place to start. From there, get everything up to and including "Dopes to Infinity," and pass on the "greatest hits" type stuff.

Monster Magnet at a raw and freaky state. Includes a much better version of "Nod Scene" than on Spine of God. However, "Snake Dance" and "Tractor" are no different than the later versions. Still, this is an awesome release, and, for me at least, is one of their best.

Okay, I gave this one 3 stars because it is an Okay EP. Whereas the Superjudge album would get 5 stars, and God Says No 4 stars, for example, you see? Basically, if you are a Monster Magnet fan, you need this EP for Lizard Johnny, Freak Shop USA, and a different version of Nod Scene. The other tracks can be found elsewhere. Lizard Johnny is a very cool track. The overall sound of the EP is similar to Spine Of God and Tab. I don't know why I'm writing this review. Bottom line: this is the one to buy when you've already bought all their other CDs.
