"Monster Makeup" by Dick Smith is a well-produced introductory instructional video for the serious amateur makeup artist. In it, Dick Smith, creator of makeup effects for "The Exorcist", demonstrates vampire makeup in several stages. He begins by revealing a simple formula for making fake blood from simple kitchen ingredients. What follows is a demonstration of how to make artificial teeth and fangs using sheets of dental wax. The rest of the tape is devoted to a demonstration of vampire makeup techniques. The first stage of the makeup shows how to create a Lugosi type vampire makeup. The second and third stages show how to make the skin look progressively more decayed. This video is helpful for anyone wanting to prepare for Halloween or a masquerade party. Unfortunately, the reproductive quality of this video is poor. Audio and video quality is adequate to provide the instruction. The content is strictly introductory. Just the same, the serious amateur makeup artist will want it in his collection.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dick Smith Monster Makeup Video, April 3, 2001

This review is from: Monster Makeup [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a short, 30 minute, video hosted by monster makeup legend Dick Smith. It seems to be meant as a companion piece to his monster makeup book. He keeps saying that more info is in the booklet that comes with the tape, but I didn't get any booklet. The tape is copyrighted 1989, and seems dated even for then. The demonstration (vampire, zombie) is at a very simple beginner's level. If you want a quick demo to help you do your Halloween makeup, then the price is right. If you want detailed, up to date material, look elsewhere.
