4.0 out of 5 stars This series might bring back my minis addiction., May 20, 2009

I went to my FLGS and picked up a few packs of these. I ignored the price because we recently got a tax return and extra on the pay check.

I found them better than the other 4th Ed minis that have been coming out. There were some better paint jobs and even some decent molds being used. Out of 3 packs I got 1 repeat. Not too bad considering the rare-uncommon-common ratio.

There was a Githyanki in there with a nice cloth flourish that stood away from the mini body instead of tacked on and painted over. I wasn't that impressed with the large War Demon. Just a little too cartoonish in my opinion. Decent job on the Cyclops and the Frost Giant, it doesn't look like Bozo the Clown like the Frost Giant Scout from WotDQ. I haven't found any repaints yet, unlike the in the Heroes series.

The stat cards are well stat cards. The nice part is each card does show what book, adventure or whatever source the full stat block can be found in. If it's new, it says so. Otherwise, you'll see MM, MM2, H2, etc. Handy if you need more than what's on the card.

There's that old element of random in there, which is nice. I do miss that. Sure it meant I got 9 Ophidians in Angelfire, but there's always a little part of me that get exciting cracking opening the case to see what I got, hoping for that extra cool rare they tend to make.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very cool set, with a few caveats, May 27, 2009
This review is from: Monster Manual: Dangerous Delves: A D&D Miniatures Booster Expansion (D&D Miniatures Product) (Misc. Supplies)
Okay, I don't have all 40 in the set. And I likely never will - like most people, I'm not made of money - but if the two sets I purchased are anything to go by, this minis set is still well worth the price. Yeah, there are fewer minis in the set, but overall they're of better quality, both in sturdiness and in paint quality.

The two rares - a war devil and a unicorn - were very good and very useful. Others have commented that the war devil is kind of cartoony, and I can see how others might think that but, honestly, the malebranche has always been kind of a corny critter, ripped right from the medieval pages of texts on hellish bad guys. The unicorn is excellent. It's gray with white spots, rather than pure white or some random fantasy colour, and looks like something that might actually be threatening.

The jewel of my sets is definitely the Bonechill Chimera, which is just gorgeous. chimeras are one of my favourite monsters anyway, but this one's going to be hitting the battlemap, and soon, as a featured monster.

Others have complained that a lot of the minis are reboots - a new orc, a new gnoll, etc. - but I like that. Now I have figures I can use for an orc squad leader or lieutenant, and a different kind of mini I can use for grunts.

Overall, a very good set, and one where I'll try hard to get a complete set.

The idea of a visible mini is nice for campaign building if you're looking for a specific mini. Additionally the minis are back to the quality of the 3.5 minis (not like the s*** WoTC was putting out for the Player's Handbook series, etc.) I miss the price:amount of minis ratio that 3.5 had... but you gotta take what you can get I suppose. My other complaint is that there should be individual listings of the visible mini! What if I place three orders at separate times and get the same one three times! This would be very annoying and would deter me from buying them at all because of the price in-store compared to here. But, as I said, nice minis for any fan of D&D!
