Editorial Reviews

Straight from the crypts, er, vaults of Cameo Parkway comes this fiendish find, a gruesome twosome of vintage albums from the Cool Ghoul himself, the original TV horror host, Zacherle! The first of these albums hit #44 on the charts, as it boasts Zach s Top Ten Hit, 'Dinner with Drac' (plus as a bonus track, its flipside, 'Dinner with Drac Pt. 2'), but his sleeve notes are worth the price of admission alone - and these come to you in original 'moan-o!' None other than Zach acolyte (Zacholyte?) John Sebastian chips in with new notes, too.

1. Monster Mash
2. Hurry Bury Baby
3. Let s Twist Again (Mummy Time Is Here)
4. I m the Ghoul from Wolverton Mountain
5. Gravy (with Some Cyanide)
6. Popeye (The Gravedigger)
7. Limb from Limbo Rock
8. Weird Watusi
9. Pistol Stomp
10. Dinner with Drac
11. The Ha-Ha-Ha
12. The Bat
13. Scary Tales (from Mother Goose)
14. A-Tisket, A-Casket
15. Hansel and Gretel
16. Clementine
17. Happy Halloween
18. Monster Monkey/
19. The Spider and the Fly
20. A-B-C

Collectors Choice Music recently acquired the rights to the Cameo Parkway catalog, so it was inevitable that they would release John Zacherle's two early sixties LPs as a "two-fer" on CD. Most people will remember that Zacherle (as "Zacherley") was New York's reigning horror movie host during the 50's and 60's . His skits before during and after the movies ( on TV stations WABC, WOR and WPIX) were very funny, and he became a beloved figure in the NY area. There was quite a bit of merchandising and three LP's were recorded. Zach also had a top 10 single in Dinner With Drac, contained here in two versions along with the original B side "Igor". The first LP contained here is Monster Mash which was quickly issued to cash in on the success of Bobby Boris Pickett's big hit single in 1962. Zachs album got into the stores first and went to number 40 on Billboard's chart. The LP is composed mainly of satires of recent Cameo Parkway hits like Let's twist Again, and Hully Gully Baby along with the hit version of Dinner With Drac. The second LP Scary Tales from 1963 was aimed at the childrens market, with songs like Happy Halloween , The Spider and the Fly and the title track. But it's also very funny and is easily enjoyed by adults. The original LP featured a "trick track" whereby the first song Scary Tales could play differant sets of lyrics at random. I recall that both LPs stayed in print for years. Someone at Collector's Choice did their homework ; Dinner with Drac, Part 2 is included as a bonus track along with the aformentioned extra versions on Scary Tales, and the B side Igor, so there are 27 songs . Great sound, nice packaging ,and informative liner notes by John Sebastian make this the best Zacherley package ever. Let's hope CCM goes into the vauts and releases Zach's rare singles, and unreleased songs and alternate takes.

Born on September 26, 1918, John Zacherle, then the amiable host of Shock Theater since late 1957 on WCAU-TV in Philadelphia, and a close friend American Bandstand's Dick Clark, recorded the smash hit Dinner With Drac Parts 1 and 2 for the Cameo-Parkway consortium of Philadelphia and, with the backing of the instrumental band The Applejacks, it rose to # 6 Billboard Pop Top 100 and # 19 R&B in March-April 1958 on Cameo 130 billed as John Zacherle"The Cool Ghoul" - a nickname hung on him by Clark. It should be noted too that Part 1 was also released on Parkway 853 at the same time but with Hurry Bury Baby as the B-side in place of Part 2 which was, in effect, a lass gory version of Part 1), and on some pressings of Cameo 130 the flip was shown alternately as Igor and The Cool Ghoul.

That, however, would be his only nationally-charting single, although to be fair he didn't cut all that many such records. Later that year he released Eighty-Two Tombstones/Lunch With Mother Goose on Cameo 139 and I Was A Teenage Caveman/Dummy Doll on Cameo 145 billed simply John Zacherle and none of the sides charted.

In 1962 Parkway released these two LPs:
"Monster Mash" (Parkway P-7018) containing: A1. Monster Mash (2:57); A2. Hurry Bury Baby (2:43); A3. Let's Twist Again (Mummy Time Is Here) (2:16); A4. I'm The Ghoul From Wolverton Mountain (2:44); A5. Gravy (With Some Cyanide) (2:05); A6. Popeye (The Gravedigger) (2:25); B1. Limb From Limbo Rock (2:22); B2. Weird Watusi (2:30); B3. Pistol Stomp (2:18); B4. Dinner With Drac (2:55); B5. The Ha-Ha-Ha
(2:33); B6. The Bat (2:27); and

"Scary Tales Featuring John Zacherley" (Parkway P-7023) containing:
A1. Scary Tales (From Mother Goose) (1:52); A2. A-Tisket, A Casket (2:21); A3. Hansel And Gretel (2:28); A4.
